Those are the type of shows that you could sit and watch with your elderly mother and not have to worry about some reference to sex, drugs, violence, gay relationships and while the commercials are on you get peppered with ad's for feminine hygeine products or comdoms. The tube has changed quite a bit in my 47 yrs, I don't think it's getting better.

My favorite piece of his work was a movie he did with Andy Griffith, before the Andy Griffith show was started. In fact, it's so old, it was in black and white film. Knotts was an army drill sergeant and Griffith was a backwoods farm boy drafted into the service. The Gomer Pyle show was actually a take off from this old movie. Knotts was much better as the sergeant than they guy who played Sgt. Carter, and Griffith was a far better goofball than either Jim Neighbors or the guy who played Goober.

Are you sure that was Knotts? I remember a similar movie too, where the drill sergeant was trying to get Andy drunk and they started adding lighter fluid to his drink because that's how they made it back home. No Room for Sergeants or something? Was Don Knotts in that movie, too?
I suppose it couold be looked up.... I'm not even sure I have the name right.

That was "No Time for Sergeants". Knotts played one of the people giving the recruits their tests during basic training. I can't say I remember the one where he played a sergeant.

I always liked "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken".

I met the great Don Knotts in 1997 when I was working in a Dry Cleaners. There is a Dinner Theatre in Overland Park, Kansas that Don Knotts performed in most years, including last year. I was a 17 year old high school kid working in a dry cleaners when a car pulled up one day and my manager told me “That’s Don Knotts granddaughter in that car.” I didn’t really believe her but she went on to tell me that she had been coming in every few days dropping off clothes for Don. I just listened to her but still didn’t really believe her until I turned back to see the door opening and this little old man walk in. It was Don Knotts!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Now I was really excited. I told him what a huge fan I was of his and how I used to watch Andy Griffith as a kid. He said to me “You know, it’s still on TV.” I laughed and said that I did know. I asked him for his autograph and he signed the back of a dry cleaning sales slip. He truly is my favorite actor.

Absolutely, one of the funniest episodes ever. Do you remember what his hair looked like when they finally finished? Hilarious!

I think you are right on all counts. Seems No Time for Sergeants was the title and Knotts was the guy giving the exams. It's been so long since I saw it that I'm confusing the details with Gomer Pyle. Still, I remember that Knotts had me in stitches with his performance.
