That's right, I forgot to mention that all of your cats should be neutered. All 12 of mine are.

Yea....spent 100 bucks getting a stray cat, that was a voracious mouse killer and gopher killer, neutered. Well good for me, she went out on the highway and got killed 6 weeks later.....GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I have determined that the next female that shows up at my door....we will give her a home....BUT, I will go back to neutering the Tomcats that come around with my 12 gauge. I must admit that I had a hard time getting them to live through the process....but I spoke with a Veterinarian friend of mine and he said I should probably use a finer cross hair sight on my gun. :D :D :D

Txdon, our cat has been catching small rats all winter.... they are not what I would call a "normal" rat... but have a largish head and their neck and shoulders are much larger than typical... heavy in the front. They remind me of a rat infestation in 1960 and 1961 around Uvalde in the hill country.... at that time, we callen them Javalena rats.. because they are heavy in the front/neck/head area.

Is your cat catching these as well... just curious... if so, do you know what they are called.

Sorry, no immediate photo available:eek:... maybe next time he catches one:)

TexasJohn, I only saw the big rat for a second. It stood on it's hind legs and growled at my cat, then the cat grabbed him and took him to the bushes and starting with the head chomped and swallowed him whole. He then laid on his back all day and chirped something that sounded like "I can't believe I ate the whole thing".

It didn't have a big head or red that I could see, I will start to look closer for those details. He got something again this morning but I don't know what.

How do ya tell a cat when they bring things in the house to make sure the dang things are "DEAD".

You don't... Spent a half hour one afternoon with heavy leather gloves recovering a chipmunk that the cat "released' into the house. It was only in shock and a little cut up and happilly ran up the ree I put it on outside the house. She dosn't do that anymore, and pretty much eats everything she kills, except the monster gophers. She then comes in and runs straight for the food dish, or wants a special treey of canned/soft food.

Any "hunters" will need regular wormings also, as well as any house-only cats they come in contact with. If they are eating what they kill, they will have worms.

Excelent advice RonMar. Our hunter eagerly eats his worm medicne (Pyrantel) every month which prevents Hookworms and Roundworms.

A few year back we got two young female cats. They live in the garage and have free range over the yards - and we always keep their bowls full of dry food.

A friend told me to occasionally feed them some meat (chicken; beef) to train them to hunt because they discover they like something other than just the dry catfood. Well it evidently works because once we stopped giving them meat for free they started hunting down the local rodents and moles......now we only treat them with meat scraps on special occasions, and they're happy hunters otherwise.

We took in a stray cat (older kitten at the time). He's now full grown and big.

Last summer we'd find birds, feathers, mouse remnants... then something started to smell... clearly something dead. Basement room (storage) was full of stuff and for the life of me I couldn't find anything.

Clear room out to put floor down & finish the room and I finally found it...

Darn cat brought a RABBIT inside and seems ate most of the head?? I was baffled. Maybe he didn't eat the head but it appeared to be missing from what I could see of the decompsing & smelling mess.

I like having a hunter around but I don't like his munching his goodies inside the house & leaving a dirty plate.
