TxDon... you have my kind of CAT!!!!

There was a study of domestic cats in England once.... turns out that one cat out of maybe 100 will turn out to be a SUPER HUNTER.... brings in all sorts of stuff, large and small, all the time... much more prolific than all the other cats on the block.....

Really??!!? We must have 6 "super hunter" killing machines, makes that 100%. They even eat what they kill, then fill up on Friskies. Oh, me bad, ours are barn cats not domestic cats

Both of our cats lay on hay bales in the lean-to on my barn. When I feed them they come running to the house. Then it's off to the barn. If I forget to feed them they scratch on the back door seal.

They are good killing machines.

I think the Univ. of Minn. did some studies and they came up with the conclusion that a cat that is fed is a better mouser. Have barn cats but they are allowed in to eat if they want to. Otherwise the cat food tends to act as a coyote beacon.

Hiya,

We have a few mousers. We feed them Purina Pro. They do keep the place mouse free.

The black one is the best mouser, he's polydactle with double paws on all his feet, 22 claws in all, hence his name "22 toe Joe" He's average size/weight about 10 Lbs.

The other 2 are Maine Coons, direct from Patten Maine. They are huge cats, both well into the high teens for poundage and they aren't overweight. We have a leash for the orange one as one of my daughters leash trained him, it's "medium dog" sized.

Tom

The best hunter we ever had was a male that moved in from the neighbor's when we lived in San Diego. We took him back at least 4 times before giving up. He was one for presenting his prize before chowing down on it. He specialized in rodents and reptiles. Getting run over by a car slowed him down, but he was bringing us presents until the end.

The second best hunter we had was a declawed siamese. She was a birder. Couldn't figure out how she did it until I saw her catch one. She'd pounce, pin them down and bite before it knew what hit it. She lost most of them, but it didn't dim her enthusiasm. She also defended a decent sized territory purely by bluff. She could puff up and scream louder than the other cats in the neighborhood, so it worked most of the time. You could always tell when somebody called her bluff when she'd fly through the pet door, turn around and hiss, scream bat at the door.

None of our current crop of felines is delivering presents these days. The oldest is pushing 15, given up hunting and has turned into a lap cat. The youngest is still catching leaves.

This is your friendly public service reminder. February is pet dental health month. Please bring your pet for a dental check-up and remember to spay and neuter your pets.
I know it's pet dental health month because I just read it in Hints From Heloise.

A polydactle cat!!!! no wonder he's a great mouser... nothing could get away from 22 claws !!! He must be nimble too. The name, polydactle, makes it sound like he's a descendent of a dinasour!
