Double Chipping? And MDF?

I'm thinking about 'double chipping' some piles of wood chips for a smooth walkway on a couple of trails. Anyone doing such a thing?

Also, I have a supply of used MDF used shelving that I would like to dispose of in the same manner. Is there any drawbacks to chipping MDF 'lumber'? My concern is that it might dull the chipper blades...

Most of the MDF I've used self destructs after several rains.

If your chipper doesn't make small enough pieces on the first pass, I would adjust the chipper, change the exist screen, or check that your chip breaker is still functioning. (BTDT, mine lost one of its two "teeth" and it made a big difference in chip sizes.)

Double passing chips tends not do much in most chippers, unless yours is a hammer mill type chipper/shredder, in which case you probably want a finer screen on it.

No matter how you use your chipper - simply using it will dull the blades. I've never considered "double chipping" my pine chips. Time will always reduce the chip size. Particularly if used on a traveled way.

When the power company trims trees I try to get some of their chips. The chips are not pretty or consistent and I do wind up with some real stringy stuff. But the price is right, I spread it thick and it does seem to break down and makes nice walking and driving path.

This year I hit the jackpot. They had a list and were rationing the loads to make sure everyone on the list got some. I told them I would take all they could give me. I wound up with eight loads! I live in the country, on a cul-de-sac. So quiet road, plenty of room to drop the chipper and an easy dump.

So, I guess I am saying, in my opinion you are going to a lot of extra work for limited benefit.

You're right about simply slowing down the chipper feed speed. Simple solution.

Regarding chipping MDF - not a good idea either. The chipper totally mulches the MDF planks, but, in my case, I ended up with a pile of mush mixed with a bunch of non-degradable plastic from the trim. At least I was wise enough to try only one plank, which I ended up shoveling up and putting it in the trash.
