double dipper dilemma

..especially if using the shorter of the 2, will have you over filling the crankcase, and could explain why or if you might been seeing oil blowing out the vent tube,
deepNdirt, I think you are on to something here.

I'm home in town so I can't look at my YM240, but I thought my metal-top oil dipstick was longer than Ginormous' photo.

Again, I suggest pour in four quarts of oil and see if that reads halfway up the oil dipstick. I think it is calibrated so 'full' = 4 liters, about 4.2 quarts.

Another variable: Is your dipstick on the left, or right? Early 2TR20 had the dipstick on the right. Maybe the mount point for that one is lower, so a shorter dipstick might have been used. Again, pour in 4 quarts to verify the dipstick.

my oil would never fit into the hyd location & vise versa. My hyd stick has oil/ Japanese. I bought a new 1 (hyd stick) from Danny parker a few years ago for a spare. It was ordered from yanmar for 336. It also has oil/ Japanese

I always have put 5 quarts of oil in my engine. :ashamed: I thought i read that in the manual, and it fills it up to the top of the cross hatches? What are the others doing?

I'm thinking if either of the 2 are the incorrect ones for the engine you may not been using the right amount of oil all this time, especially if using the shorter of the 2, will have you over filling the crankcase, and could explain why or if you might been seeing oil blowing out the vent tube,

Added my oil based on the quoted capacity, not based on the stick -- 5 qts according to my research ... so I should be good there. Part of what got me thinking about the sticks being switched is that it looked low when I checked it. Now I'm wondering where it ought to be on the stick and whether or not I'm burning oil...

Mine with 5 quarts on my engine oil dipstick will be at the top of the cross hatches. It stays there all year this last year i dont think i put 30 hours on it but even in a year that i put 50 on the oil it did not move from the line, well that i could tell. Could of moved a 1/16 or 1/8 but i dont look at it that close, just real quick when i check it to make sure there is oil in it and in the correct spot.

My manual states 6.8 qts. 7 since I use a little larger oil filter

My oil isn't really due to be changed yet, but I'm going to go ahead and do it so that I know for sure where 5 qts shows on the stick. Then I'm going to watch to see if it drops... What is the most likely culprit if it IS burning oil?

/ double dipper dilemma #28
Worn rings, letting oil into the combustion chamber. Its no really big deal. As long as your making power and not adding a qt every time you use it i would not be that concerned with it.

/ double dipper dilemma #29
I am going to post my opinion and then go back read the thread  I think based on my tractor the long one is the trans and the short one is motor. I agree totally with all the guys that say fill it to the correct amount and read it that way you cant argue with common sense.

Mine wont interchange fwtw but my trany is the longer one that I know for a fact.

My motor oil add mark I believe is 2 US qts but I may be wrong that might have been my old Massey?

From YM240 (Ym2000) Operation Manual: Oil capacity = 5 liters (5.3 US quarts).

YM195 (YM1700) page is identical except YM195D transmission 16 qt and front axle 5.3 qt.

I should have started with this... here are a couple pictures of the 2 dipsticks. Between them is a US quarter for size reference. Both sticks are metal. The crosshatched pattern on the long stick is only about 5/8" long. The shorter stick was in the engine oil, and the longer one in the hydraulic fluid.

I'm sure I didn't switch them, but I'm wondering if the previous guy might have. (That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!! :D)

Not sure if the ones from my 1700 are original, but are what came with it when I purchased the tractor, Seems to be slight different then the other ones shown, the 2 dipsticks are almost equal in length,
The hydraulic stick is plastic and measures from the O-ring to the tip 7 7/8
The Engine stick has a larger metal cap and measures from the O-ring to the tip 7 3/4
each have 710 as well as the Japanese writing ( OIL ) on them,:D

Ok, I'm a day late and a dollar short. A quart low as well. :D

I just got back out to the ranch. These are the dipsticks in my YM240. They seem to match deepNdirt's sticks, not Ginormous's.

'Oil' is metal cap, longer crosshatching, slightly shorter length. The transmission dipstick cap is plastic. Both have English/Kanji text.

Long ago I punched a tiny mark halfway down the oil dipstick to indicate where 4 quarts fills it to. For this photo I indicated that point with the white wire.

California -- thanks for the pic and for showing where full is on your oil stick. That's really helpful.

Not to hijack my own post, but... I finally decided to upgrade my tractor! I just ordered a YM2210 from Fredrick's in AL yesterday. Should be here next week sometime. Hopefully (or unfortunately?) this will cut down on the number of weird questions I come up with on my tractor. :D I am planning to put my 1700 up for sale. It's been a good little tractor for me, and should make someone else happy too.

Cheers! :drink:

must of really made an impression on you! I know that was a substantial purchase you just made! Did you go for the loader as well?

You will really like the powershift congrats on the new purchase!

I've actually been to Fredricks in Hartsella Al. for a Tiller and parts for my Ym2000. It's a Nice complex. I heard they opened another location but never been to that one "Yet" I was so impressed with my Non Ref. Ym2000 that was purchased from Spalding in Griffen Ga. "AS,IS" We bought a YM2500 refurbished by Fredricks from Steve also and was Very Pleased with it. Haven't used it in a long while once or twice since my MCG. ordeal and havent heard of anything so all still must be good

Kenmac -- I ordered the YM2210 (2WD) model. The first image you show is the YM2210B model, which has longer side panels than the normal YM2210. If you look at the Fredrick's tractors images, the YM2210 "looks" a lot like the YM1700 pic they have, just BIGGER and MEANER. :D In real terms, the big differences are that is has 5 more HP at the PTO and also the Powershift transmission.

Huh, looks like one of my posts from yesterday got lost...

Clemson -- no, I didn't go with a loader. It would be just a "nice to have" for me, so I couldn't justify spending an extra $3000+. I was going to spring for the 4wd "D" model, but they didn't have one and didn't know if/when they would. They had a 2310D (4wd) but it was $2000 more than the YM2210...

Car Doc -- yes, definitely looking forward to have Powershift. Give the Power!

BTW, Fredrick's has been really good to deal with. Travis Smith is the guy I've been talking to, and he is working on a combined load to save me some money on delivery cost. Total cost (including about $700 in shipping) is ~ $5700.

Did I mention that I'm excited?? :D
