Down the Gravel Road

How can it be further one way than the other.:confused2:

I believe this can happen 2 ways....

1. There is a split road with one way traffic... and 1 direction has a out there path and the other is more direct. This is how a friend's road is...
2. The road is a loop off of a main road.. and he is not quite in the middle of it..

Make sense?

One way streets.
Dropping off the kids at school.
Dropping off the wife at work.
Picking up a friend on the way there.
Giving a friend a ride home on the way back.
Stopping at the grocery store.
Highway prevents return by same route.

Lots of possibilities. Everyone doesn't live on a dead end road.

Paved private drive to edge of property, then 800' of gravel driveway.

DW wants it paved, I want to leave it as gravel. Keeps a lot of potential visitors away. Hasn't kept out anyone I wanted to see, and there are a few I don't want who come anyway, but it is a lot better than paved.

About 3 1/2 miles of gravel road, and then 400' of driveway. Which is now nicely graded, since I got my new toy a week ago. :)

1/2 mile of private drive and 3/4 mile of shared drive that I maintain with the bota and assorted implements. No fees to the neighbors, just a little booty when their gardens come in. Rewarding most of the time, but can be a real challenge after a lot of heavy rain or 12 inches of snow.

Lbrown, I can relate to it as well. If I head out to the nearest state highway I have to go in a South Easterly direction and that trip is 5 miles of gravel road. If I head in a South Westerly direction then it is 6 miles to the nearest state highway. BTW, our county is notorious for what we call "dead sections". There are numerous reasons why but in my corner of the county it's due to the North Canadian river. For example, if I go the "South Westerly" direction I have to go: S-1/4 mile, W-1 mile, S-1 mile, W-2 miles & S-2 miles.
Nights like last night make it all worth it. It was one of those "pin drop" nights. God's creation at it's finest: Sky full of stars, cool temp, coyotes yipping, whipporwills calling and so quiet in between you could hear a pin drop.

2.5 miles from either direction.

The road that gets the ruttiest is the one where everyone travels in the same tracks, so that the gravel piles up in the center, and when it rains, the rain erodes the soil in the traveled tracks...

In my other direction, people, including me, do not let the traveled path become tracked down to soil hardpack, and never ruts when it rains.

I have a choice of a paved or gravel road. I usually take the paved, but sometimes enjoy traveling the gravel road because of it's path thru the woods.

The land that I bought in 2008 is on the only 1 mile gravel (Alabama red clay mud to be more precise) section of a nearly 20 mile county road, and we are not at the end of the road. There is another section about 1/2 mile down the road that starts being paved again!! Once we start building, I am going to petition the county commission to finish paving it. There are about 5 other families on this 1 mile stretch.
