Wooo...that is Heavy Duty! I thought you must have been up around 200 amps! I also am envious. Most professional job!. I can't wait to see pics of it working on the IH. By the way, what's the model # of the Dozer?? BobG in VA

I mostly use 7018 for the heavy stuff and have not been welding that long so where do you use 7014 and which is better for what??
Nice job by the way.

7018 is what i always use for any kinda alloy or high carbon steel since its a low hydrogen type rod, on mild steel or structural steel tho about the only reason to use one over the other is the fact that 7014 flows allot better than 7018, this is good for flat position welding but any outa position stuff or trying to build up stuff the 7018 works better usualy in my opinion, but i am by no means a welding expert i just sorta learned from messing around in the garage welding, i can do pretty nice welds on flat position stuff but overhead and verticle are still where i need practice to make a nice looking bead. i attached a picture of my lincoln welder also

now that the rake itself is done, i had to make the pins and brackets to attach it to the dozer blade, these two plates will be welded to the top of the blade, here i am drilling the hole for the pins, after i drilled it i bored it to size just like the other plates i had shown in the milling machine a few messages back

next step was to make the pins that will connect the rake to the blade brackets, i used an old hyd cylinder rod and cut it up with my makita abrasive chopsaw, well actualy its more of an abrasive skil saw since i took it off its base a while back and made a shoe for it so i could use it as a portable saw to cut up all sortsa stuff. i cut the two pins to length and then ground the ends to a chamfer

after i had the pins cut to length i welded a handle to them to help in removing them then put them in the milling machine to drill the holes for the retaining pin, this time using the verticle milling head since the holes were much smaller, it was tough getting thru the layer of hard chrome and case hardening, i had to sharpen a center drill a couple times but i got them both drilled. thats as far as i got tonight since it was about midnight when i took this pic, but hopefully if all goes well tommorow i will have pics of it mounted to the machine

Mark I never thought of using a horizontal mill with a boring head in it. One shop I worked in had a horizontal boring mill for upto a 48 inch hole. I did use a horizontal mill that we mounted a chuck to it and 4 tool holder to the table to turn some large pipe flanges and other work on. I like your rake, I used to build a few here and there and they are handy on a dozer. those are some great looking cuts on the teeth and the mounts to. I used to be good at cutting free hand but since my car accident im less steady. I cheat now with my pattern burner. One thing about a rake i learned is to either hard face the tines or what i do on alot of things is take a leaf spring off a pickup and cut them into strips to puut on the bottom of the teeth and on the fronts to make them last longer. It helps if you do alot of clearing but occasional use its not a problem unless your in sandy soil like we have here.

yea i had been fourtanate enough to come across the tooling for the horizontal spindle very cheaply at a surplus store, i have been looking for a medium sized lathe chuck to mount to the spindle also as you mentioned for turning large short stuff, using it to bore a hole is kinda a pain since you have to work behind the table, so ya cant see what your doing real well, but you make do with what you have to work with.
