Draft Links Won't Raise

1993 JD6200 Row Crop, during summer use, tractor located in PA, when (tractor) is cold, draft links won't raise. After tractor runs about 5 minutes they work perfectly - any ideas?

Define "cold"? It's possible the hydraulic fluid is contaminated with water and is freezing. Does it look milky?

Hydraulic fluid completely drained and refilled with genuine JD fluid (13 gallons) - changed all filters - same result. Tractor = cold, not ran for a couple days. Temps in mid-July have no impact.

did you try changing the filter when the fluid was changed? dumb question to ask, but i know i have forgotten to do the simplest most obvious things alot of time so i didn't know if that might have slipped your mind or not.

Are there any other hydraulic accessories on the tractor?
I think the next step in troubleshooting is to put a gauge on the system and check the pressure the pump is producing when cold vs. hot.

NO idea if there is a valve in the system or suppose to be one to prevent the hyd oil draining back into the transmission but it sounds like there is and something has happened to it. Trash, was behind the filter and lost or the filter had it built in and new ones don't.

There is nothing attached to the tractor at the time. Where would you suggest placing the gauge? As an after thought, if you leave the tractor idle, for that same 5 or so minutes described earlier, you can hear the engine change it's tone very slightly, then the links (will) work. Seems like a valve may be sticking? I was on another forum earlier today - there was someone reporting a hydraulic issue and something about a dime valve - and it cost @ $1 to repair/replace??

If you have no remote ports, like on the rear or for a loader, then you will have to find where the test port is, and also the specs for your machine (PSI rating). It is usually on the pump itself or on the tranny, you could follow the hydraulic lines back and maybe find it. You should also try jdparts.com to have a look at your system.

I am guessing the "dime valve" (never heard that term before) is the pressure relief valve (PRV), it's also usually on the tranny somewhere, and it set the max system pressure. It's spring operated so I don't think temperature would affect it though.

At this point I am suspecting the pump.

There are (4) ports on the rear, however nothing is attached. I'll check w/JD on the test port location. There was something referring to a dime?? The outside temperature does not have an effect, the same conditions exist during the summer months. You mention the 'pump'. Is this an internal or external pump. There looks like more than one pump - which one might you be referring to? What (other) functions would this pump control - what may be some other symptoms - everything else seems to work fine? I've attached a picture of the rear ports.

You can plug a gauge into on of those ports, then operate the lever that energizes that port to take the reading. You are effectively "deadheading" the pump to see the PRV is set at. You won't have to find the test port since you have those remotes.

There are a least two pumps, on is usually just for the steering, and the other is for everything else.

Maybe you should inquire about the price of a service manual, they are usually less than $100.
