Years ago in my youth I worked for farmers quite a bit and remember seeing both wood and metal drags on the rear of a disc connected via chains. I am trying to remember how they built the wood drags, does anyone remember this and have suggestions how I might build one for 7 ft disc? What size 2x lumber, etc., I remember they had two pieces of wood or metal on a right angle to the drag, looks like a side view of a table if you stood it up. Looking for advice on how to build one.

I have a section of telephone pole chained to the back of my harrow. Works great to smooth out the bumps. You need something pretty heavy and solid.

I've seen something that looked like a skid pulled behind. Or rows of angle iron welded onto a outer frame.

Around here it is just what is handy. I used a 8' long piece of 4" .375 wall pipe last year. Do-alls have 2x6 2x8 bolted on flat bar to level soil. You just want something that levels not ridged doesn't dig or really carry soil, right?

Old box springs work well too!

My neighbor uses 8'x6" angle iron with two 3' chains welded on. The chains hook to two chain hooks that are welded to the rear of the disc frame. The angle iron has two holes cut in it to match two 1/2"x5" bolts welded upright on top center of the disc frame so that the iron can be set on top of the disc for transport. I used it once, works good.
No matter what is used, if it's too light it won't get the desired result...if it's too heavy it will drag up a berm at the end of the row.

The drag I use for my 7-ft Towner off-set disc is three old tires including rims chained side-by-side to a piece of chain link fence which, in turn, is chained to the disc with two 5-ft chains. I'll be using that disc and drag this morning on my 6-acre hayfield.
