Ok, so a few things took longer than they should yesterday (and it was a stinker), so the axle is made now with its swing arms and brackets. Just have to mount the ram and pump, a couple of gussets and the put the hubs together. Slow progress in the heat:eek:

A couple of average photers anyway

Ok, so I should have said "this weekend my dragalong gets a hydraulically operated swinging back axle" , cause so far that's what's done. Not being able to find my 3/4" drill bit cost a lot of time looking everywhere and finding all sorts of lost treasure in the process. In the end I had to run with what I had at hand which was a 31/32" drill bit and a die grinder (which seemed to take forever to take .4mm off the radius) - that was for the ram pin brackets.

The whole process involved looking at what steel is on hand that preferably doesn't require cutting - got lucky with the pump bracket and the axle gussets - the gussets were a square of 5mm plate that had been cut with a thin disc about half depth across corners (someone must have changed their mind half cut??).

More photers

Nice Job  I like and can relate to you mentioning about the gussets , the half depth cuts on then and someone changing their mind ! :) In my case though , I would be pointing the finger right back at myself since I am the only one around here doing any metal work . :ashamed:

I like your idea as I have thought for a couple of years on how to do something similar with my homemade 8' cultipacker . Although it rolls , I don't like pulling it across driveways and such , would rather be able to hook up to it , take it to field , then lower and use without driving snail speed or stressing about breaking a roller on it .

Kudo's , Love homegrown Ideas !! :drink:

Oh , What was the JB weld for ??

The JB weld? Oh it was just one of the treasures I found while tearing the place upside down looking for a drill bit. No doubt I'll find a use for it on this project too Fred.

P.S. what's a cultipacker? Is that like a rotary hoe or something?

I found this info quite helpful for helping me decide what type of road grading gear to put on my wish list - the angle tilt & pitch can be a good thing for crowning & ditching nicely. Having said that my current dragalong will not will not do the fancy angling but will do more volume of dirt. Gunna post this in a couple of places cause I think its good info.

Thanks for the pics - uncle google knows all.

Dragalong is almost 7' wide. It sure has done a good job in all its incarnations. It started off with just a chain bridle hooked to the towball (needed too much room to turn around but when you got stuck you could reverse up and do a running snatch to get it out) - then it got the teeth on the front - then it got the towing arm so it could be reversed (sort of - on flat smooth ground at least) - and now it's finally getting up/down wheels so it's going to be a pleasure to use now. Maybe a few cutouts in the front I beam will allow some more material thru to the "box" and I have thought about some method of "ramping" the rocks up into that box too so that they can all be dumped in one location.

Another incarnation maybe it turning into a towable scraper that can also be driven from a diesel motor & box & shortened diff (with dualies) out back and the motor can provide hydraulics and all the controls that need to run up front will be for clutch, throttle and the bucket hydraulics - I have been known to think up some crazy :confused2: stuff but I reckon if I win the time lotto, it could happen. Just a bit tidier shifting dirt over a distance.

What does Xfaxman mean - did you have something to do with fax machines?
