Someone at one time on either JPlan.com or on tractorbynet. talked about a an attatchment they had made, where you could back up to a log/piece of wood an hook on to the wood with out getting off the tractor and use your 3 pt hitch to lift and put the weight on your back wheels and take off. I bought a set of tongs through a forestry supplier called Baileys which work fine, but I liked the idea of this little invention, does any one know what I am talking about?

I built something like that years ago. I got two hubs and spindles off a AMC car. They are held on by four bolts. Back then the hubs an d rotors were one piece and many perfectly good hubs were thrown away when the rotors went bad. A few hits around the edge of the hub with a hammer and chisel removed the rotor. I welded a U-shaped frame about 24" deep and 30" wide out of 2" square tubing and some plates off the ends of the U to bolt the spindles to. At the top of the U I welded a tow pole 7' long and stepped it down about a foot. Along the top in the front I welded a sloted piece to hold the chain that went around the front of the log. At the rear end I attached a double reduction hand winch to lift the log up off the ground so you can put the chain around them.

It can handle a 30" diameter log 12' long with no problem. The log is completely off the ground so no damage is done to the ground below and the log stays clean. Without the winch I think I have about $100.00 in it. I have even towed logs over the road behind my car with it.
