Drain oil, hot or cold?

I've always done it hot,

Did some research:
Castrol
Cold oil will not drain properly, so before starting work, drive your car around to raise the oil temperature to bring it to normal operating temperature.

Valvoline
First, run the engine to operating temperature.

Dont know about anyone else...but I change my oils in the SUMMER TIME...not outside in the coldest day of the winter when its 15 below! My oil sitting in the pan is at least 80 degrees...THATS "warm" enough for me.

As someone else posted..if your oil filter is doing its job...forget about running the engine till the oil is HOT.

I'm not sure I understand this "suspend" stuff. If the junk settles out when you stop the engine and the oil gets cold, then the cold oil you drain out should look exactly like the new oil you put in.

Just ponder that a while and it will come to you.

I have always assumed that the stuff that might settle would be "big" stuff. Chips, clunkers. The fine particles I figure will stay suspended no matter what the temp.

My old oil never looks like it did when I put it in.

Or, how about the time my boss took his 1977 Cadillac into the dealer for an oil change... drove out, but the engine wasn't running right- they'd simply added 6 quarts without bothering to drain out the old oil. Or, the time I changed the oil in my Austin Healy 3000, which had a cartridge filter in a big steel housing- where you couldn't really see it. Of course, you'd start it up and check for leaks. I'd gotten the housing on crooked, but tightened it up seemingly correctly. Interesting how fast a couple of quarts of oil can be pumped onto the shop floor!

Had a friend in college. They drained his tranny fluid and overfilled his engine. Tranny failed. Engine did fine, as the tranny did not last long enough to put any strain on the engine.

Follow your owner’s manual for proper directions in changing your motor oil.

That's fine until something changes. Like Pluto isn't going to be a planet anymore!!!! What's Disney going to do with that dog????

The absolute best temperature is neither hot nor cold, just medium.....

But what temperature should the newly added oil be warmed up to prior to being introduced into the neither hot or cold but just medium crankcase????

Your kidding me right? This discussion is about draining oil. New topic about putting it in. But I think my manual says to slightly heat the oil so it flows better into the engine. It also mixes better with the foreign particles still clinging to the side of the crankcase left there by running the engine just prior to changing the oil....or something.

So 25 minutes at 200 degrees does it for me. Wife sort of freaks out but WTH? No accidents yet...but my mom used to keep leftover cooking oil in the fridge, I took a swig of it once thinking it was tea. Maybe that's why I smell my food first now a days. :)
