What's a hook thinky?

I'm thinking a clevis looks like a U with pin at thru the opening. Put your chain thru the opening then put the clevis " U" on your drawbar. That's what I do when using a chain to drag, pull etc. Then again my chain fits thru my clevis when on my drawbar.

You are right about, "<font color="blue">...looks a whole lot like a three point hitch adapter (trailer mover)</font>. Sorry, if my description wasn't very clear. This is a reprint of my original attachment, with the drawbar hilighted this time. Only the business end w/ clevis is shown. Most of the picture is of the 3ph frame w/hitch ball. I tried to orient folks by saying the swinging drawbar (what little of it is shown) and "thingy" was on the right side of the picture. This shot was just to show Laminarman one way a drawbar could be used, and not necessarily intended to be a great shot of a drawbar (which obviously it is not).

Thanks to Ron, Egon and DocHeb for shedding more light on the swinging drawbar. And to theboman, the "thingy" is a clevis, pinned to the drawbar. That is what I imagined Laminarman was describing as being on his drawbar.

Why would you need to chain the 3 point to the drawbar when towing? Wouldn't the hydraulics keep it in the lowered position, or any position you choose? I have a NHTC40D. I guess I'm not sure if the 3 pt, when lowered, then floats or stays where you want it.

The idea of taking the clevis off then passing the chain through works. Sometimes I'm really, really stupid. I was swearing trying to loop the chain through and hook it to itself. One fry short of a Happy Meal. Sorry.

A normal 3PH does not have power to hold the arms down. The arms or links can be raised above the position that they are set at.

You can try this with your 3PH. Without any attacment on the 3PH. Start your tractor. Then set the 3PH hitch control to any position exept all the way up. Grab ahold of one of the lower 3PH arms. You should be able to lift it all the way up. Your <font color="blue"> NH</font> may have heavier arms than my <font color="orange"> Kubota </font> but they should still raise. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Yep thats what I keep on my drawbar most of the time. For me, a swinging drawbar comes in handy when hooking up my harrow in tow mode or the 8' cultipacker. Neither of these move easily by hand so I'll back up to the tongue is align with the drawbar in the middle position, lift up the tongue of the implement, swing the drawbar to one side and then swing it back when the tongue's two holes are above and below the drawbar.

Drawbars originated fron days before 3pt hitch when everything was drug and had its own depth/height adjustment. I still have an old 4 blade chopper that is self supported on tires and height adjustable axle. They were kept around for implements like transport and offset disks, balers, planters etc which were to heavy for 3pt. All our farm trailers grain carts, manure spreaders etc had yoke type hitch that pinned straight to drawbar instead of ball hitch. No one would fiddle with find/ install/remove ball to pull a trailer. I haven't used the 3pt drawbar and wonder what keeps it from pivoting in lift arms and putting pressure on ball hitch. Seems ball would be trying to pry itself loose from hitch under heavy load. Any answers to this?

Would a toplink prevent the lifting of the towed item??

That same issue made me decide to build my 3ph drawbar with arms for the toplink to attach to. Of course, that keeps the 3ph drawbar stable so it can't twist. Like you, I've never tried a plain 3ph drawbar with no toplink connection. Don't know if a hitch ball would twist itself loose, but sure seems like it would try.

Anytime the tongue weight gets light, whatever you are towing can raise up on you, lifting the 3ph lift arms and toplink. Like Ron said, a normal 3ph doesn't have the ability to hold things down, only lift things up. I've seen some commercial (yellow) tractors with 3ph downpressure, but you won't find that on many consumer grade tractors. The "safety" chain method is simple and effective for keeping things where you want them. It's a good use for your drawbar.
