Had one once and figured it would be a much better rig if it was rigged like a trailer, with the front attached to a drawbar. The weight on the tractor tires will improve the pulling power, and the leveling and control of the grader blade will be much improved.

I just did a search on "grader" in Build It Yourself and there are 186 threads. That would be a start!

I saw one sitting beside I-75 in a field....looked to be about 16" feet long with a ring tongue on the front and dual wheel at the other end. The blade was in the middle and probably had some type of hyd turn set up. Didn't look to see, but it also probably had a hyd device on the rear to tilt the wheels up/down for depth control... but mostly just guessing. Wouldn't be hard to build. The long wheelbase is what whould do the leveling...and 16" of I beam would be a start on weight to hold the blade depth. [ I entered " inches in stead of ' feet.....senile moment.. ]

That trailgrader is impressive. The part 1 video shows some real rough road to grade and I can only wonder how long it will hold up with the imbedded rocks. Seems it would be super for a drive of gravel.
The weight will be important, supplied well with the water barrel. The length between the rear wheels and the tongue connection is also good for a level road bed.
Along with digging the old gravel up, then smoothing it out and not forgetting to pack it down before the gravel loses its moisture, this grader idea is a great one to have a good drive.

That trailgrader shure dose look like it was made from a boat trailer. Cool vidios J_J. Thats the first thing I thought too. ha ha! I might have to build me one too. But with the price of metal old boat trailers and scrap material is getting harder to find. Every one wants my "project material" pile.
South Carolina is going to enforce a law they found on the books that says you have to get a license to haul more than so much metal like copper and brass, You go get this license and it lasts for like 2-3 days then it expires. Repeat as needed. Sean.

YMMV

Make a drag like this sketch, we maintained a gravel/dirt road for years this way.
Front blade scalps the humps, second spreads and fills and the angle sends surplus to the next blade with the last finishing the surface nice and even.
Often we added weight as well.
An old tire located between the tractor (we used a jeep) and drag will absorb shocks.

Our first drag was wood with 3/8 X 3" cutting edges and lag bolts attaching the blade.
A later and improved version was all steel welded but some nogood decided to borrow it for scrap steel.

Yes. The wheels are about 2 feet from the end now, but I am thinking of a way to raise and lower the frame for height adjustment. Two trailer jacks, or hyd cyl. I believe this trailer was a jet ski or small boat. trailer. A longer boat trailer would work also. If the blade is in the middle, the blade would only raise half as much as the towing vehicle when going over a bump. After running over that bump several times, it would disappear.

I guess I figured the 3PH would suffice to raise/ lower the blade ... Not good enough?

If the blade is mounted solid, you lower the 3pt to cut the tops off the hills, and keep lowering on each pass. If your tractor can pull a lot, it won't take as long. My Kubota is only 22 HP, but 4WD. A barrel of water will help to keep the wheels on the ground.

What about using an old NH 55 or 56 hay rake frame to carry a grader blade? Seems like all the essential attachment points are there: raise/lower, tilt, and angle. Maybe a little reinforcement in some areas, but for simple driveway maintenance of semi-loose gravel, just add a used snowplow blade lip to a channel frame and put some weight on it.

You might have a heck of an idea there. If you set it up so each side could be raised or lowered remotely and mounted an angling backblade under it, add some weight and a little reinforcement as you suggested, you'd have the makings of a real grader.

My Dad made this conversion to one of these old graders years ago, worked like a charm to adjust blade height. I still had to ride along behind to change blade angle for him.
