What words of wisdom do you lot have for removing this thing,
took me an hour last weekend
to do something that should have taken minutes.
Was very very tight,
first oil change.
Chain type oil filter wrench I have kept slipping on it.
As access is restricted,
what wrench do you use?
Thanks.

Buy one of the cup type oil filter removers and use a 3/8" rachet. The next change should go easier. I think they use an impact wrench to install the factory oil filter.

Is there an aftermarket oil filter which is acceptable for the diesel, or do I have to go to JD for the filter?

Wix makes one. But its not an expensive deere filter.

Yeah, there are lots of aftermarket filters. Just make sure that if the Deere filter has an anti-drainback valve, the Wix one does too. I've heard of carnage from aftermarket filters that screwed onto the engines but weren't spec'ed correctly.

Thanks for the advice all.
Anyone offhand know the size of cup type oil filter wrench?
I could measure it on the unit.
Maybe I should get a set :)
Thanks.

I could look it up for up if needed, PM me. I have a full set and i use them all the time. The oil change on the XUV was simple! and took about 10 minutes. Without the cup wrench, i could see it being a pain.....

Next time you buy a filter take it by a parts store and find one that fits. There's still not much room to work but it's better than nothing. Too bad these filters couldn't be remotely located on the frame.

I am sure they could. they make all kinds of remote relocation kits. but its not that tight.... I would rather change that oil filter on the XUV than my fuel filter on my Dmax.

I have an oil filter wrench with pivoting claws that I bought at one of the chain auto parts stores. It requires a 3/8 inch socket wrench and fits a wide range of filter sizes. The only problem with it is getting the initial grip. I can usually get it started with my fingers, but not always. Once it gets the initial bite on the filter, the harder you turn it, the harder it bites.

In a very tight situation, I just put a rubber band over the claws and push it up onto the filter. The rubber band holds the claws against the filter sides and provides the initial grip. Works every time.

It is a made in China product, which I have seen for sale at several different places, under at least two brand names. I think it cost $6 US.

I'll offer one more general suggestion for removing oil filters. Buy some rubber gloves, the "industrial" chemical resistant kind. I bought mine at Northern Tool but they're all over. I've found them really useful for removing filters by hand. The glove protects your hand from hot engine part (within reason) and the grip makes it seem that you're much stronger, and able to remove most filters without tools. And they keep the hot oil from getting all over your hands. If they get messy, just wash them with some soap and water to keep them grippy.
