It’s been years ago a friend used the screw driver trick. It didn’t work, the filter just shredded. He eventually had just the base stuck in the engine. This was on a Dodge 2.2 front wheel drive so the filter was easy to get at so he took a chisel around the edge of it and was able to spin it that way. Once you do the screwdriver trick you’re committed.

Once you tear the filter using any of the other tools you are in same boat. No backing up, forward at all cost

I have busted up filter using all methods, chisel or even better air chisel becomes the last resort before fire enters the ring.

Have a large hydraulic filter on my Power Trac PT1445 that I was only able to remove using this Bremen chain wrench. It crushed the filter and made a small hole in the can, but I was able to contain the mess with a plastic bag.

Lucky to have enough access to use this style of wrench.
