Pulled out my original operators manual and it lists the following feet per minute for steel

Something goofy with your chart, maybe your missing a decimal point or something.

80 ft per minute ?, how fast would that be for a half inch ?

I don't like to promote HF stuff but I got this one as a gift and it works pretty good here at home.

It's a pedestal model with a slow speed of 150. It'll do a 1" with of plenty of cutting lube.

1/2" at 80 feet per minute (Low Carbon Steel) is 611 revolutions per minute.

Just about every table for calculation Cutting Speeds is based on Feet Per Minute for the a corresponding material to be cut.

All the info posted is General Speed Recommendations from Bridgeport Machines.

Slower speeds are almost always acceptable with the exception of some material that work hardens like Stainless if you go to slow or have dull cutting edges...

OK, I thought the feet per minute was travel speed, as in 80 feet of steel in 1 minute.

Do you have any problems with shop equipment and rust up in Western WA?

In California never had a problem and didn't even think about it when I stored a few things at the Shop in Olympia... everything had developed surface rust.

Cutting tools should be run at the SFM (Surface Feet per Minute) the manufacturer recommends. They would know best. Experience doesn't go far here. The cutting tools are constantly changing as well as the material that is being cut.

Not to bad, and the shop is a roof insulated pole building. Few days I get a little sweat. Helps to get out and use 'em.
And of course, a good cleaning and a wipe down with a 'oily' rag.
