Drilling rock with a rotary hammer for blasting?

the contractor i work for hooking up septic controls has a rock hammer/breaker on his matchine. goes thru bedrock and granite just fine. but its destroying his machine. he says hes constantly rebuilding his equipment due to that hammer. the vibrations and noise SUCK. i hate being onsite when this equipment is in operation.

I hired a machine that was a tad smaller than that to chip out a septic tank. It was just regular rock not granite or anything and it took 5 hours to chip out 18” over a 5x10’ hole. And yea they wreak machines and are super annoying. If you’ve got the room blasting is much better but they won’t blast within like 250 feet of existing structures.

We put the hammers on the oldest machines just for that reason it beats them to death.. just changed a oil cooler that broke apart..........

the nut cases that purchase some of the remaining lake properties out here are finding out the reason no one has built there before. after $40,000 in rock hammer and demolition work to get in a foundation, and they have not laid one ounce of concrete yet. My buddy said he just spent nearly 30 days rock hammering away on a foundation for some rich sob for a house, and that the guy just kept nagging him to work faster. i mean...its granite for goodness sake. what the **** does he want. now he finds out that it may take a month to hammer out his driveway and approach. still no concrete or wood on site, and they've been working since may.

Through my job as a land surveyor I have been around some drilling and blasting. For a one time effort some kind of hammer drill might work but not well. The one I remember was on tracks and the operator walked along beside it. It hoses connecting it to a very large compressor. It would drill a hole several feet deep in a few minutes. I would say it is a business if you are going to get in to you go all in or stay out.

i really have no idea. im sure the nearby owners of their $million$ homes would probably sue them if they blasted. i honestly have not seen anyone except the departmant of transportation up here use powder monkeys.

A little OT, sorry... Anybody ever seen what they use in rocky areas to put in guardrails? Around here (along limestone drop-offs) they use ~4"x6" galvanized I-beams about 5 feet on centers to mount the rails to. Curious if they just use pile drivers or pre-drill. Some of the upper layer might be rubble. Limestone isn't granite but it's hard to imagine
I-beams holding up to pure pounding.

Why do they hammer out foundations? It seems like they could drill pegs to prevent sliding and form it and pour.

No idea. Im an electrician. I only observe, then go home and be glad for my flat property. Im not a mountain goat, though i may smell like one.
