I stole the PT design of the driveway edger, the single disc design. A week ago I picked up a single worn out disc from the farmer down the road. It was still 13" which seemed fine for an edger. I made and welded a bushing onto the disc and used an old mower spindle for the shaft. Bought some 1.5" square tube and made something like the PT edger, accept it clips onto the front of my Ingersol, someday it will clip onto a PT. I use the lift arm from the snow blower to lift it up and down. Rather than use down pressure, I welded another spindle vertically so I could stack 40lb of barbell weights out by disc, that way I could use it in "float"

I have 550' of driveway, and I have to say it worked great after a couple adjustments. I just drove up and down a couple times and I was done. Now I have to finish picking up the grass and dirt. It rolls the grass/dirt over onto the driveway and leaves a little 2-3" deep trench about 4-5" wide. It more or less naturally follows the pavement edge, so it’s really easy to use.

Any pictures, yet??

It sounds like a very clever and economical design. When I was at Tazewell, I looked at their edger. It's a nice simple unit, but it was over budget for me at the time I added up the costs of the machine and the "must have" attachments.

Now, if I only knew how to weld...

My digital camera quit a few weeks ago, I'll take home the company camera tonight and shoot a couple shots of the edger and driveway.

I reposted the driveway edger in the Lawn & Garden section with pictures since it's not on a PT, but some day it will be.

Thanks lots for the pics. I saw them on the Lawn & Garden Forum.

I was wondering... I already own a PT trailer hitch accessory, which is basically a standard 2" receiver fastened to the "quick attach" plate. It doesn't get used alot on a day-to-day basis, and I was thinking about fabricating an edger like yours, made out of box stock (at least near the attachment end), so I could slip it into the receiver that I already have. That way, the trailer hitch would see more usefulness, and I would not have to spend another ~$150 for a new quick attach plate which would be dedicated to one use, namely the edger, or ~$400 for a PT edger.

I would think that an edger like yours attached to a receiver could be adjusted for height and pitch with the normal hydraulic controls on the PT. What do you and other PTers think?

Also, do you or any other PTers think that the forces seen during normal operation of an edger would be tolerated OK by edger being mounted into a receiver?

Thanks again...

I think it would work just fine. On mine all the force is transmited through the 1.5" tubbing, and doubt I'll ever bend or break it, 2" would just be beefier yet. During operation it doesn't look to stress anything much at all, especially at about 3mph, any faster it gets hard to hold a good line along the driveway. I think the receiver hitch is a great idea.

OK. Here's a picture of my version.

View from other side.

Slices down to 10" deep. First pass in soft soil or multiple passes in harder stuff. This is one area where the PT outshines other units... front mounted implements. As you have found with your Ingersoll, the edger out front is the way to go. You can steer it right along and the tractor follows.
