British Columbia's impaired driving laws don't just apply to cars, trucks and motorcycles, say police. They also apply to tractors.
One Coombs-area farmer found that out to his dismay on Canada Day when he got pulled over on Highway 4A.
Oceanside RCMP Corporal Richard van de Pol said police pulled over the red, Massey Ferguson tractor after being observed by police.
He was administered a roadside breath test and was then issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and the tractor was impounded. He was also issued a violation ticket for driving with no insurance.
He added that police don't just keep an eye on regular drivers as they cruise the area's highways.
Wiith any motor vehicle, whether it be a tractor, a motorbike or a car, people are expected to abide by the drinking and driving laws, he said

What not to do when driving a tractor especially if you have no insurance.

heck the OHIO cops pull over riding lawn mowers, bikes and even roller skating while drunk will/can land you a DUI! guess it is a way for them to make more money...
I'm sure the several times that Ive seen or read about the riding lawn mower guys getting pulled over were in major danger of running down and killing a helpless flower bed

Yeah when you leave your property you are fair game. I do know a convicted DUI lawnmower guy. He wasn't cutting grass at the time. He was just being a nuisance.

I'd like to see a report on a DUI on roller skates. I think I'd try to argue that it isn't driving.

I know it sounds funny, but that mower driver (or the tractor driver or skater) could pull into traffic and get himself killed or get someone else killed.

Not me, honest. I do enjoy the odd :drink: but not if I am driving anything. Easy enough to get into trouble  without drinking. This incident happened a few miles from our place.

There's drinking while tractoring and then there's taking your tractor onto the highway while you're drunk. I am fine with them pulling this guy off the road.

I'm not so sure that you are exempt from these laws while on your own property either. I always lock the gate behind me when I go to mow a field and may have an adult beverage with me.

I would think your fine on your own property, however if you have to traverse any public roads to get to your property you could be caught. Of course if you hurt someone on your own property, your soberness will probably be a factor.

I love to carry a brew with me when I mow on my rider. My tractor is a different story though.

Just today...

"In Iowa, it's illegal to drive any motor vehicle anywhere while intoxicated, Fehr said. Grimstad could have been charged while mowing his own lawn, the sheriff said."

Sounds like a "law" that needs to be challenged. It also wouldn't be the first time a cop said or did something that was not actually the law.

I'm not trying to promote drunk driving, I'm just saying your own property does mean something. You don't have to register your vehicle to drive on your property. Even the law has to have a good reason to even come on to your property.

He was on the highway when they caught him. Heck in the days I drank, I could stumble faster then that thing was going!

I agree with you 110% - When the day comes that we cannot do whatever we want to do on our own property as long as it does not harm others then it is time to admit the country is lost !

After doing some searching over lunch, it appears a lot of the DUI laws do not include much distinction over private vs public property. There seems to be a lot of opinions on this. (Imagine that, on the Internet!)

I think the one thing that would protect us is the fact that the law has to have a reason to come on the property to begin with. Plus, if you are not harming anything, the law probably could care less. Of course, I say that because our county sheriffs are pretty cool and use a lot of common sense. Our state police are a different story though...

He was on a public highway, not some quiet back road. Speed limit of 50 miles per hour. Lots of traffic on highway 4A.

This is where quotes get lost and threads get misunderstood. My original quote (and the quotes thereafter) was from someone saying you would get a DUI on your own property. We have deviated a little from the original situation.
