Try putting up your own still and see how fast the Feds come down on you...
...and alcohol's legal.

I know you can brew a certain quantity of beer...not sure about distilled products.
Main thing is it must be for personal use (no selling).

I have been doing a little checking on this. Everything I have read say that making whiskey is illegal. But i can make ethanol legally. :D

I haven't researched it, but my understanding is that it is the distillation process which makes it illegal. Nothing to do with personal use vs. sale/gift.

I remember seeing an episode of "Modern Marvels" that dealt with distilleries. One of the segments featured a restaraunt that served their own distilled spirits (I'm thinking vodka for some reason).
I seem to remember the owner of the restaraunt/distillery saying that most of the regulations and red tape he encountered during the approval process dealt with ensuring that the state and federal taxes were paid accurately and timely.
In fact after bottling the booze, the restaraunt had to turn it over to the government to apply the appropriate tax labels . When that was done the restaruant then "purchased" the spirits back from the govenment to sell in their establishment:confused2:

Man, that's a bummer. I was thinking on drinking that ethanol to take care of the dry mouth from smoking spanish peanut shells. What a buzz kill.

Talk about your God-given rights! About the first thing any past civilization has done on entering a new territory has been to figure out how to use local ingredients to make booze. It was our own First Founding Father, George W., who put the kibosh on his subjects making their own corn squeezings without paying taxes. And he complained about stamp taxes and taxes on tea, for goodness sake!

Growing up, I met a real old time moonshiner...supposedly retired by then. He lost an arm to the revenooers.

I make some legal beer and wine, and I think I should be able to concentrate the ethanol I make if I want to. It isn't even legal, according to some opinions I've read, to make apple jack by freezing the hard cider you can make legally.

Some laws are just plain not right! Big surprise, eh?

Jethro,
Whoops, senior moment, her name was 'Hester Prynne', the fallen woman of the book 'The Scarlet Letter'. Used to be a common novel used in high school English classes. She had to wear a scarlet 'A' on her dress as a punishment for adultery. The story is set in Puritan times if I remember correctly.
Dave.
Now I know I'm getting old... read your original post and thought " Oh yeah, that's Nathaniel Hawthornes Scarlett Letter"

Apparently, English literature is even less popular these days than it was in 1966 :laughing:

Hester is still around it seems, but probably read by few. I've always enjoyed reading and was lucky to have a super English Lit. teacher in the 12th grade - Ms. Hohenstein.

heck the OHIO cops pull over riding lawn mowers, bikes and even roller skating while drunk will/can land you a DUI! guess it is a way for them to make more money...
I'm sure the several times that Ive seen or read about the riding lawn mower guys getting pulled over were in major danger of running down and killing a helpless flower bed

Over here a law going back to 1872 makes it an offence to be drunk in charge of a carriage, a horse, a cow or a steam engine.

More recent laws cover things with engines.
