Had dry asphalt laid in part of driveway. Being a loose asphalt, is there a way to seal it by spraying. If I pour the liquid sealer and use a push broom it will move the loose top layer. Is there a spray method? Thanks

It’s asphalt that basically has no tar or bonding. The more traffic the more it packs down. Not sure the correct name.

Sounds like millings to me. If you pour sealer on it, it will absorb to below the surface. Unless it's compacted well above 100%. And it still won't do what I'm thinking you want it to do. And the Texas sun will wick out pockets of it and make quite the mess.

Just my opinion.

My neighbor put quite a bit of that down. If it's rolled and compacted really well hot summer days should cause the residual tar or whatever they used to melt somewhat and bind it again though not as nice as original.

I would look into buying a 50 gal barrel (or 5 gal bucket of Special MS, medium set, asphalt emulsion, often used to prime). What you are describing is a prime coat, often with sand (or if we get fancy, granite screenings) spread on top.

I think the price is around $6/gal. It's applied warm, to mildy hot, but you could pull the nozzles out of a sacrificial pump sprayer. You also can dilute it with additional water.

So, on RAP (millings) "resetting" in summer... ahhh, maybe, but not likely. Most roadway milling is only asphalt with very little remaining AC content (asphaltic cement, the Black sticky stuff that holds it together), asphalt is ran at about 325 degrees F, so summer sun isn't going to do it. Now, if it was milled because of something other than age/deteriorating, it might kinda bond a little bit.

Applying a prime of asphalt emulsions does do a lot, and sand the top. You might be able to find a contractor locally, as every paving outfit will have a tack truck or atleast a tack wagon. It's getting them out to do a small homeowner job that is hard.

Asphalt Millings or RAP "Reclaimed Asphalt Product" is the correct name. It is often used to do driveways and minor side streets adjacent to mainline roadway resurfacing. They will prime it with asphalt emulsions and spread sand on top; as someone mentioned, the sand absorbs some, and keeps it from tracking.

Whether it's a DIY type thing or best left to a contractor kinda depends on size, what stuff you have laying around, and your budget.

This is a semi local paving company/Asphalt plant owner that actually lists vendor pricing (which is pretty rare). This is Not the exact product, this Trackless Tack has a wax in it to avoid tracking it onto the road once it "breaks", Special MS emulsions is likely the best bet. It's not straight AC, and isn't ran at the same temps, and can be watered down somewhat and still be effective.

I read a study once by Oklahoma DOT that studied using higher application rates of more watered down prime, and found good results.

Atleast knowing the product name might get you pointed in the right direction.
