DSL Question

This is a small locally owned telephone company. They have no competition so they're not going to give anyone anything free. DSL is $39.95 per month plus $10 if you rent the modem. At that price it's still cheaper than I'm paying for dial up. Dial up is $25 plus $26.25 for the extra phone line.

Another question. Do you have to update a DSL modem often or does the technology not change that much?

The first time I had DSL was for about 3 years, same modem. It was a local phone company so when I moved in 2002 DSL wasn't an option. Verizon started offering it here early last year. I have had the current modem for about 14 months without a problem.

Do you have to use their specific modem?

There's probably a dozen aftermarket brands tat will work for your service, and allot of the time it's much cheaper.

When I bought my cable modem in a past life, I was able to get a remanufactured one for half price.

BillyP, what part of OK are you in? Your TelCo wouldn't happen to be Valor, would it? That is what we have down here in East TX, now and I know they have some holdings around Broken Arrow, OK and a few in NM.
DSL base package around here is ~25/month. I don't remember the specifics, but I think 1.5down and 768 up? I may be wrong. I don't qualify for DSL (too far from the switch) so I pay ~$60/month for satellite.
And the DSL modem will probably have updateable firmware, but that shouldn't have to be messed w/ unless you have a problem or some glaring issue is identified w/ a particular brand/model. Some of them even d/l updates automatically. DSL is pretty static, what matters is what flavor of DSL you have (ADSL or XDSL). Also, do you know if they are doing PPPoE, or what, on protocols? The few times I have messed w/ PPPoE I have had more trouble than w/ straight DHCP.

What'd you say? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I've got 750k DSL. They want another $10 a month for the 1.5 meg and last week called to ask if I'd upgrade to the 1.5 and unlimited long distance telephone service for $15 a month. But have no idea what you mean by ADSL, XDSL, PPPoE, and DHCP. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

   / DSL Question #17
Sorry,
ADSL is Asynchronous (or Asymmetric) DSL- Upload and download speed is different
XDSL - Not sure, but I think up/down is same
(also, I believe one is more distance-sensitive than the other)
PPPoE- Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet - Just one way of making the connection to their (TelCo's) network. Usually requires putting a userid/password in the PC or Router to make connection.
DHCP- Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol- your PC or router broadcasts to the TelCo network and asks for an address to connect w/. Usually does not require userid/password to connect.
Didn't mean to confuse. I do a lot of networking as a side business and it tends to have its own jargon. Kind of like tractor stuff w/ the FELs, 3PH, MMM and such /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif\

Also bear in mind these are quick, simple, from the hip definitions of these protocols/terms gleaned from my experience in MY AREA. I am sure someone out there can shoot holes in my explanations. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thanks for the definitions, Hud. Of course with my computer knowledge, I'm not sure which one I have. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

hud, I'm in Eagletown OK. That's about 9 miles east of Broken Bow. The telephone company is Pine Telephone which only serves about half of McCurtain County. As far as your other question, I don't have a clue. This is all new to me. I do believe it's ADSL because the upload speed is quite a bit slower than down. I'm not even sure what speeds they are quoting.

   / DSL Question #20
Trust me, whatever they are offering is faster and cheaper than what I am stuck with here in the sticks. I would kill (well...maybe maim anyway) for DSL or cable out here. Around here we have to provide our own soup cans and kite string. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
And you aren't too far from me down here around Texarkana, TX (22 miles West of). We used to spend a little time at Beaver's Bend every now and then. Pretty busy place around Memorial Day and The 4th.
