Dude ? vs. Daddy O...?

No, you guys just have "blokes" and "mates" and "diggety-boo". And those are the words I understand. (Evidently, if everything was good, it was diggety-boo, or maybe it was tiggety-boo, I'm not sure).

We had a crew from the UK here in our facility for about 6 weeks doing an equipment install and start-up, and we had a lot of fun exchanging slang terms. Of course, I went through the questions of: If a truck is a lorry, an elevator is a lift, and a flashlight is a torch, then what do you call a torch? Turns out it's still a torch, too, at least according to those guys.

I grew up using "Oh Man!" as an expression or exclamation. For example, "Oh Man! I hate it when that happens." Now, it would be, "Dude! I hate it when that happens." They use that expression even when talking to girls and girls use it too. I could replace almost every instance of "dude" with "man" or "oh man," and they would fit just fine. As with all things, this too shall pass. It'll probably end up being something more offensive in the next cycle of "homer-speak."

Edit: Oh BTW, when I want to get my grandson's attention, I just call him a ******; as in, "Quit acting like a ******!" It's amazing how that gets his attention far better than just saying "idiot" or "stupid."

I dont care for the common use of "Dude". The other one, is "frickin/freakin" in place of the f-bomb. I'm not much for cursing, and do not care for most alternatives. We had that discussion just a while back in our Scout Troop...

Seriously, freakin'? I'm guessing, gosh, dang, sheesh, shoot and darn would have to be off the list then, if you are going to be consistent.

I call people that I am acquainted with, by their given name. I call everybody else "Sir" or "Ma'am". Even when talking to friends, I will say "Yes Sir" or "Yes Ma'am". In retrospect, I really think that one's manners come from the illustrations that one's parents instill in their children. BTW, I am 61 years old and grew up in the 60's. I really try not to be judgmental when it comes to slang used by another generation, as long as the intent is not meant to be derogatory in nature.

I would call you Dude, out of respect for your wishes on how you like to be addressed. I might even slip in a Mr Dude on first acquaintance. But I wouldn't consider it license to call you Daddy O, buddy boy or some other random moniker that I think is cool.

I'd take "dude" over "homey" not even sur how to spell homey There was a movie (old one) with John Wayne where he was called "one fine "dude" so in that perspective, that's good company.

Another word that I am weird about is "ya'll". If I am around southerners or other country folk, it doesn't bother me as it seems to just be part of the culture. (I grew up in the country but not that far out). If I hear some city "hoodlum" say it I feel like stabbing them in the eyeball.
