I bought a Norway maple at an auction last year. It turns yellow in the fall, which was OK with us because we already have lots of red from another maple, a Japanese maple, two plum trees, and, best of all, a sour gum tree. Don't know if the sour gum is hardy where you are, but if it is it apparently always goes red. Scarlet, really. Beautiful tree this timne of year, and has glossy leaves through the summer.

Andy
Here is a Nursery that has many pictures of Maples. When you click on each type there are more pictures of each one showing the colors in each season.
Be careful planting Maples. Their root systems likes to come too the surface and destroy foundation, sidewalks, drives and anything else they can raise.

Thanks for the link.
Mrs AndyM wants a Japanese Maple about 30 feet from the house, straight out from the front room window. She's trying to go for the same view that Inspector507 has from his living room window (see attached photo). I don't think most varieties get much more than 20 feet high.

The larger "regular" maple trees would get planted closer to the road, so they will be 150 to 200 feet away from the house. Not a problem with roots in the way there!

We've probably got over 50 trees on our 3.6 acres. It's not wooded, but I like to describe the amount of tress on our property as "park-like". They're all oak and hickory trees though. We'll add the maples next year to add some variety to the front yard. I want to put in a birch tree near the new deck out back too, which will get built in the spring (I ran out of time this year).

Vin,
Yeah, I thought the regular maples are bred that way.

AndyM,
Search high and low for a good Japanese Maple, there are literally hundreds of varieties of Japanese Maples, and they are divided into several different classes. We have several on our property. Some are VERY slow to grow. Some are like Inspectors and have a wide canopy, some are nearly upright, many are green, yellow or variagated. Leaf shapes can range from almost needle like to very broad with little disection. I don't know a lot about regular maples, but we love the Japanese varieties. Bloodgood is a particular variety I like (we have 3 because I like them alot), it is probably too upright for what you want to plant as it is taller than it is wide, but it has great spring and summer red coloration if planted in full sun, and it grows faster than most Japanese varieties. If planted with afternoon sun the leaves will start our bright pinkish red in the spring, turn to deep red in early summer and then become blackened red and green in mid-late summer. Height can reach 25' but the spread will likely be closer to 15. There are some nursaries that specialize in breeding and developing Japanese Maples, do a web search. Each spring I get a couple catalogues, but for the life of me I can't remember the names of the nursaries now. Also, Japanese Maples do NOT like wind, especially winter wind which will dry them. Most also require full or nearly full sun.

Andy,
Thats the only Japanese Maple we have on the property. It's more wide than it is tall. Probably planted less than 20' from the house, so it does hang over the walkway some. I really hate trimming it, but I have to, no one will be able to get to the door. Hmmmm......that could be a good thing...... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Bad thind when I want pizza /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I didn't mean to hijack John's thread, but this is really an informative thread from the beginning on anything about maple trees. John's question wasn't dumb, since we were wondering the same thing here.

Bob, you wouldn't happen to have summer and fall photos of those trees, would you?

I gathered that from the photo, which is why I decided to plant ours 30 feet from the house. Do you have a photo of it taken from the outside?

P.S. Mrs AndyM was down your way for her job today...
Driving to Columbus and back in the same day is not my idea of fun!
