Dumbest Thing you have done with your tractor

One thing that can be said for men is that we all make mistakes LOL. We just never want to admit to it, especially if it is tractor related or causes damage to it. Hopefully everyone will read these posts and learn from our mistakes and try hard not to follow in our footsteps. I still get a kick out of lifting a back tire off the ground every once in a while just to check my balance. Hahahahaha.

WoodlandFarms's post reminded me that things we've done as a kid are eligible as well. I baled hay once with my dad. I was working on fixing up some old pole fence while he baled. I kept noticing that he'd leave a few pounds of hay at the end of the row every time he turned around. (If you see where this is going, don't give it away by telling the others.)

I rushed through the fence fixing so that dad could show me how to run the baler. I took note of the instructions about how to change ground speed to keep just the right amount of hay feeding into the baler as we made a few rounds. After a bit, dad turned me loose to bale while he set sprinklers out on the part of the field we'd already done.

As I became more comfortable with it, I determined that I was going to one-up my dad and not leave any hay in the field. With my eyes fixed intently on the baler infeed to keep just the right amount of hay going in, I cleared the end of the row without leaving any hay. At the same time I heard a terrible cracking noise and looked down to see the splintered remnants of the pole fence that I had just fixed.

I spent the rest of the morning fixing the fence again while dad finished baling the hay.

Like I said at the beginning of this post. I only ever baled hay with my dad once.

Can I nominate the guy who delivered my sand today? I happened to meet him when he had the first load (14yds gravel) and showed him where I wanted it. He dumped it fine and headed off. I went to work and when I came home I saw where he had dumped the load of sand. About 10' away from where I asked, which was not bad, but he put it right in front of my sand pit that I've spent the last several weekends working on.

Pre-dump pictures:

So I can't put the sand in the pit area, because of the big sand pile in front of it. I'll have to move it to the side to get access, then move it in to the pit... Thanks for the extra several hours of seat time bud!

Can you push in down some and then drive over it and push some into the pit? a real pain to do but can be done. And he knew you had a machine? Otherwise maybe he thought you were doing it by hand ,in which case it would be close by.I will usually place a stake and flag and tell them to drop it right on target. (over the sign).

Bedlam- The tractor was parked just as in the picture. Actually I'll just have to move a few yards I suspect before I can get in there. I also want to put some more gravel behind the back wall before I get much sand in there.

I should have put a mark on the ground, but since I talked to him less than an hour before he dumped, I thought I had it covered. :)

Dumbest,,,, well too many to pick from so I'll pick the one I have some pictures of to help tell the story.

I had this large rock that I wanted to move to use in some landscaping I was doing. I tried to get it in the bucket but it wouldn't fit. Now as a reference to get an idea of its size, the bucket is 5' 6" w and 2' h. So since it won't fit in the bucket, no big deal, I'll just tie it up and hang it from the bucket, as you can see in the first picture. The picture was taken right where I picked up the rock. Now I've carried more weight than that in the FEL many times so no big deal, nothing to worry about right!! The second picture shows the road where I'm going and I'm going to go up the hill to the right. Notice the ground slopes down from the road. Now I get going and since I'm not aware of any danger I turn to the right and approach the road at an angle.

OK everything I'm going to describe in the next paragraph all happened within a few seconds.

So when I get to the slope on the side of the road, naturally the tractor tilted to the right. Since the FEL is up high (see I'm thinking there's no weight in the FEL the weight is near the ground) the FEL swung to the right. Now when that happened the rock which is hanging like a pendulum, swung to the right, and since the rope was not attached to any fixed point but just looped over the bucket, it was free to slide to the right. Ok so here's the picture, tractor is on a slope leaning to the right side, FEL is up higher than it should be, massive heavy rock hanging now from the right side of the FEL outboard of the right front tire. Oh but we're not done! The next thing I realize is that the left rear tire is lifting up off the ground, OH NO BOTH rear tires are lifting off the ground. And it was at that instant that it hit me that I had removed the backhoe and only had the box blade for counterbalance and it wasn't up to the job and my tractor was in the process of doing a one handed handstand on the right front tire. I quickly slammed the FEL control forward which dropped the tractor back onto all four.

Its really spooky when your tractor does something to you that youre not expecting. As Ive always said, Its the ones you dont see coming that'll get ya.

99% of the time I have the backhoe on and thats the configuration Im use to.

Well at least you had 4wd for breaking :) I was afraid you were going to tell us that once the rear end lifted off, you had no brakes and it took off downhill at full speed
