Farmed with it?

I can understand that. If you want a tractor to take a beating use it on a farm. of all the new ones my boss has purchased in the 15 years I have been working here not many look new very long.

The header is only about a foot short for the ROPS. I've hung a ball, even a SMV sign. That's what makes this "the dumbest thing I have done with my tractor"!!

I have resigned myself to changing the shape and height of the door. I have proven I cannot rely on "judgement" - ha ha ha:rolleyes:

Cut the header for my door 2" even though I only needed a 1/4-1/2 "
Had my new Stihl Weedeater on a hanger mounted around the Rops and one end on door post .The weedeater has handle bar type controls. I had folded the handles and going very slow just caught the bottom of garage door.
Bent the middle of the overhead garage door. Had to straighten the bottom of door , the weedeater was not hurt. Thankfully !!!

A friend of mine had a Zero turn delivered to his house for a couple of day to see if he wanted it or go back to a rider like he had.
Well grass was damp from a rain that day but he just had to try out this mower.
Mowed front yard , He loved it went to back yard went to top of hill behind his house . Turned to come back down hill (going forward). His wife in the garage watching him pick up speed and out of control. Yelling watch the flower bed,to late went the length of flower bed about 10' Mowed the length and mower deck width 54"
Need less to say no Zero turn bought !!!!!!!!

I don't know if this counts as a dumb thing that I did but I was involved because I was there. And it certainly was one of the dumbest things I was ever involved in regarding tractors.

This happened over 50 yrs ago when I was still in grade school. One day my friend Carl told me his father had just bought a tractor and suggested we go check it out at lunch time.

Across the street from the school was a tract of homes and up the hill above the homes was the property where Carl lived and at the high end of the property was Carl's house and the tractor. So when I saw this tractor I was truly impressed, it was an antique even in those days. What it was was an old single lung John Deer with the large flywheel on the side and the large all steel wheels with the big spikes.

So then Carl says "you've got to hear this thing run" and he somehow starts the thing up and man was that something, I tell you I had never heard anything like it, and to this day haven't heard anything like it since. It had a sound like nothing else.

Then I guess he decided he was going to drive it around to show me how it worked and I suppose to show off that he knew how to drive it. So he's up there in the driver's seat doing all this stuff and the thing starts moving. Wow that's Cool. Then I noticed that Carl was frantically busy trying to do something, ah,,,, is he trying to shift gears, or is he??? And then I realized something was wrong. The tractor was pointed down hill and picking up speed and I could tell by that time that Carl was no longer in control, and apparently Carl had come to the same conclusion because the next thing I see is Carl bailing off the back of the tractor. OMG by this time the tractor is now flying down the hill bouncing completely off the ground at times and headed straight for the houses below. I stood there watching in horror knowing even at that age that the fence would not stop it and that at the speed it was going it was going to destroy which ever house it hit. Heaven help us if anyone's home.

And then an amazing thing happened, the tractor took a big bounce and came down hard on the right side to where I thought it would roll over but it didn't, instead it turned the tractor about 10 degrees to the left, then almost as if someone was turning the wheel it began to turn more and more to the left until it was parallel to the fence, then it hit a small ditch and came to a stop. By the time the tractor came to a stop it couldn't have been more that 20 or 30 ft from the back fence of the houses.

What I think happened was that when he first got it moving (from the very start it was pointed down hill) he probably started in too high a gear and tried to shift into low and then couldn't get it back in gear. Then with it free wheeling and pointed down hill it was off to the races. Then maybe he tried the brakes and obviously that didn't help.

I don't remember what kind of trouble he got into, who knows maybe he managed to get it back up the hill before his father got home. What I do remember was the sight of that tractor, dead on the fall line headed straight for those houses and knowing it was going to be really bad.

Don't loan attachments unless they are attached to your tractor. And then refer back to Soundguy's post.

I have really beat up screwdriver I give to people when they want to borrow a tool. I tell them that this is the tool I loan out. That pretty much stops the discussion right there.

I LOVE that. Every time it's awkward becuase you think "this guy won't hurt it" and then they do. And they may be all sheepish and apologetic, but it's still messed up. This is clearly one of those areas where you feel less and less generous the older you get.

I'm still generous.. but when someone asks to borrow my tool box to fix 'X', I offer to come over with my tool box and help them fix "X" if I can.. otherwise I tell them it's cheaper to buy their own tool, then use mine, break it, and then buy me a new one, and then they still don't have the tool, but paid for it.

Just came in from using the tractor, dropped the grapple off and latched onto the bucket. Went around the side of the building and dug out a half a yard of material from the base of my tractor building to place coarse rock around it to stop rodents from digging under (mainly skunks), went to dump the bucket full of material over the bank and there goes the bucket with it down over the bank. Thought to myself I'll flip the levers when I get around the corner of the building with the tractor. DOH!!
