I don't know if this counts as a dumb thing that I did but I was involved because I was there. And it certainly was one of the dumbest things I was ever involved in regarding tractors.
This happened over 50 yrs ago when I was still in grade school. One day my friend Carl told me his father had just bought a tractor and suggested we go check it out at lunch time.
Across the street from the school was a tract of homes and up the hill above the homes was the property where Carl lived and at the high end of the property was Carl's house and the tractor. So when I saw this tractor I was truly impressed, it was an antique even in those days. What it was was an old single lung John Deer with the large flywheel on the side and the large all steel wheels with the big spikes.
So then Carl says "you've got to hear this thing run" and he somehow starts the thing up and man was that something, I tell you I had never heard anything like it, and to this day haven't heard anything like it since. It had a sound like nothing else.
Then I guess he decided he was going to drive it around to show me how it worked and I suppose to show off that he knew how to drive it. So he's up there in the driver's seat doing all this stuff and the thing starts moving. Wow that's Cool. Then I noticed that Carl was frantically busy trying to do something, ah,,,, is he trying to shift gears, or is he??? And then I realized something was wrong. The tractor was pointed down hill and picking up speed and I could tell by that time that Carl was no longer in control, and apparently Carl had come to the same conclusion because the next thing I see is Carl bailing off the back of the tractor. OMG by this time the tractor is now flying down the hill bouncing completely off the ground at times and headed straight for the houses below. I stood there watching in horror knowing even at that age that the fence would not stop it and that at the speed it was going it was going to destroy which ever house it hit. Heaven help us if anyone's home.
And then an amazing thing happened, the tractor took a big bounce and came down hard on the right side to where I thought it would roll over but it didn't, instead it turned the tractor about 10 degrees to the left, then almost as if someone was turning the wheel it began to turn more and more to the left until it was parallel to the fence, then it hit a small ditch and came to a stop. By the time the tractor came to a stop it couldn't have been more that 20 or 30 ft from the back fence of the houses.
What I think happened was that when he first got it moving (from the very start it was pointed down hill) he probably started in too high a gear and tried to shift into low and then couldn't get it back in gear. Then with it free wheeling and pointed down hill it was off to the races. Then maybe he tried the brakes and obviously that didn't help.
I don't remember what kind of trouble he got into, who knows maybe he managed to get it back up the hill before his father got home. What I do remember was the sight of that tractor, dead on the fall line headed straight for those houses and knowing it was going to be really bad.
