Dumbest Thing you have done with your tractor

reminds me of an old dry lake bed I crossed one time with my NH 1920.. there was a layer of hard crust on top a few inches thick.. you could walk on it and it felt normal.. but once the tractor broke thru.. there was about 2-3' of 'muck' under there... had to get a long tow strap and a truck to yank me out of that one.. and I had 4wd and diffy lock. Ironically.. the only time I've ever been stuck enough to need a pull was in that 4wd tractor.. thus.. I got rid of it... have yet to be stuck in my old 2wd jobs!

The truth is four wheel drive gets you stuck much deeper than two wheel drive.

I wish I could have found the rest of the pictures of this guy. Him and his dad ended up renting a Snow Cat to get out and remove the bike. Once it broke through, they couldn't get it back out. Doh!

Man I love riding.:D

WE all have a tendency to push the limit when driving 4WD's in all varieties. That goes for 4x4 trucks and all wheel drive cars. Up here in the NE you'll see the idiots during every snowstorm. They are the ones in the ditch on the side of the road. As for flipping over. It's hard to flip a tractor with the bucket down.

Well most of the times I've been stuck (tractor, car, or truck) was with 2wd equipment. Only one time with a 4wd 4wheeler. Everything around here now is 4wd.

After spending the last 15 years in a tractor trailer up here in Maine, you're preaching to the quire. Snowstorms to me mean nothing more than bring on the popcorn and watch the entertainment as I do my run around Washington County.

when i bought a truck i was debating 4wd or 2wd. the dealer told me that i should look at it like this. "the difference between single traction and posi traction is how far you have to walk out of the woods to get help when you get it stuck, now the difference between posi traction and 4wd is you spend the night in the woods" it made me laugh but the wife said we'll go with posi traction:D

i've always brought trucks where they weren't meant to go, and have always payed the price

Spent the best part of an hour reading this thread and can relate to quite a few stories! I once got stuck with a 2wd whilst towing a trailer with about 10 people in. Had to get a friend to return back to the farm to get a 4wd to pull us out. Deep sticky mud with a 2wd David Brown plus trailor wasn't a great idea at the time!

I've always looked at 4WD in this manor... If you get stuck in 2WD, 4WD will usually get you out. If you get stuck in 4WD, you're stuck!

I use 2WD for most everything I do, and save 4WD for getting out if I get somewhere I shouldn't have been.

The exception to that is for extra traction when I'm dragging gravel back up the 42% grade hill on the back drive.

Works for me...

Don't forget, 4wd gives you 4 wheel braking, something normal in cars but not in tractors! Going down a steep hill in 2wd you don't have a lot of traction with the rear (braking) wheels.

Mowing our yard, a couple of times I've mistakenly had the tractor (B2710) in 2wd and it slid down the hill into the fence. Thank goodness for the fence!

That fits within my list of exceptions. My point was that I don't use 4WD to go into questionable areas, but rather save it for getting back out if necessary.
