Dump Trailer for SUV - 5 or 6 foot and other considerations

My sure trac 5x8 has an interior that is 7 ft 11 inches. So I take my cordless circular saw with me when I pickup sheet goods.

No offense intended, but that's the craziest thing I've ever heard. You cut your 8' sheet goods just so they can fit in a trailer that happens to be 1" too short? Then what, you build things at home with 7'10" sheets? SO you stand in the home depot parking lot cutting strips off with a circular saw?!? I just can't even fathom this. Why not just lay them up against the tailgate of the trailer and keep them 8' long?

Anyway, if a pickup truck is not in the cards, I get it. But a 6x10' dump trailer already wieghs 3000 lbs EMPTY. It's a lot of weight to pull behind an SUV. I don't see how you wouldn't be exceeding your tongue weight and total GCVWR with any reasonable amount of dirt of gravel in the dump bed. You're only legally and safely going to be able to haul a yard or two at a time. For a gravel driveway or other projects, that really doesn't go far at all. How many trips are you willing to take?

Thats a fair response. My need of 8 footers depends on the project, i buy alot of masonite, something that i would rather keep flat. Rarely do i need 8 ft sheets, so i perfer to cut it . I find it easier to cut, than to deal with tying it down. I have a pretty complete etrack system in my trailer, I use a IMG-2363.jpgcross braced 2x4 with e track ends when carrying plywood. Its secure and lets me store stuff underneath.

I wouldn’t cut stuff just for the sake of being shorter but I cut stuff pretty often to make it easier to haul. If I’m buying 16’ foot lumber or 20’ pipe with the intention of using it in half I’ll cut it off.

I would recommend a tandem axle as well. SUVs have suspension designed for comfort instead of payload. Single axle will have the vehicle squat and every bump is going to jar the suspension. Plus a blowout on a single axle trailer with a heavy load has a high pucker factor to it. I would even consider putting air springs or air shocks on the back of the vehicle to offer the option to stiffen up the suspension. I put an airlift kit on my 1/2 ton pickup and could add 50% more round bales to my trailer and even throw one in the bed and keep the truck from squatting. Made an absolute world of difference in handling.

I think some good advice here if you are looking to maximize load. Proper balance and a tandem axle will allow your Jeep to do more than most would guess. Trying to remember my Grand Cherokee towing. days but I think I was easily pulling 6000lb (boat) with a tandem axle.

My 6x12, 10k weighs about 2200, empty.

My 5x8 weighed about 1200, empty.

Wat. Thats crazy light. My neighbors 6x10 10k dual axles dump trailer weighs 2900 lbs. Only accepts 7k of payload. Color me skeptical that a 6x12, dual axle dump trailer with brakes could come in that light.

My grand Cherokee is rated at 7,200 lbs because of the hemi as well/ I would not pull close to the max unless its short distant so for me pulling a dump trailer with load would be at most 6,500 pounds. The tongue weight rating on the hemi is 720 pounds and I have pulled 6,500 pounds with close to 600 pounds tongue weight without the puckerfacter.

So yes if your gonna pull heavy loads all the time-JGC is not the vehicle but neither is a 1\2 ton pickup...winch by the way has similar towing capacity for those with coil spring suspension. Some pickups have higher ratings for some reason.

I am looking for single axle dump...found one last year but it was sold before I could act....

Weight distribution is a must have..

I just checked, my 6 x 12 dump trailer weight is 1860. 2002 'draggin' trailer. 10,000 lb. I haul 6500 lbs of granite rock often with my 2013 Silverado 1500 Z71/Z85. And legally

Got any pics of this feather-light trailer. my 7x12 12k is 3240#

A foot narrower and rated 2k less but 1500 pounds lighter.

Just dont see a 8200 pound payload on something that light. I think someone fudged some numbers
