Yesterday I burned the accessory belt on my B1750. The temp was rising and quick check under the hood showed the fan stopped.
When it cooled down I realized the dynamo is not turning very easily, actually it was not turning at all. I took it out, it didn't smell bad or anything, just would not turn.
I took it apart just to see, there was a lot of caked dust but the field seemed to be fine. I measured the resistance and also the field against the ground and nothing wrong. It looked like the bearing on the bottom is the culprit - the one that stays in the field half. I got it out with brass punch and sure enough the bearing ball cage was in pieces.
Email tractorsmart this morning to see if they have it; is there an upgrade available? The part schema talks about dynamo, I found suitable alternators on ebay under 100 bucks - I hate to spent more money than necessary but sometimes it makes sense. More power HOHOHO would Tim Allen say.

Please, advice.

I don't know, maybe I'm silly, but why wouldn't you just replace the bad dynamo bearing? Those things are nearly bullet proof. If it has served you well this long, why change it?

That's the plan:)

Tractorsmart replied to my inquiry and they say there are three bearings in the dynamo. Now I don't have it with me, but I took it apart yesterday - why would there be three bearings?

Edit:

Ronnie Bowman got back to me: I was just going by what the parts manual says for the B1750.
See the attached picture.
However I did find that same dynamo used in other tractors and only calling for a single bearing of the same part number at that location.

As always, you can't go wrong dealing with Tractorsmart:thumbsup:

Ronnie was right, of course. There are three bearings in the dynamo. I fixed it and the tractor runs well again.

Pretty good engineering from Kubota, btw.

I have one of those seized up Dynamos sitting in the shed. It was always going to be refurbished and used in a wind power generator. But when that happens is another story for another time.:D

I know how it goes. I have quite few things sitting around. Like Makita grinder, all it needs is a new field ($30 or so) and it will run again:D

OK so it isn't just me.

Although... among the items sitting around waiting to be fixed, there are a select few that have p***ed me off so bad at some point that they're simply awaiting some really spectacular form of total destruction which I haven't yet plotted.
