E-15 fuel in your area?

Adding alcohol to had is like adding more bread to meatloaf It will fill your belly but just doesn't help anything. It literally takes the same amount of GAS to get from point A to point B. 10% ethanol reduces your MPG by 10%. I know, I still own three cars that I have owned since before the corn additive scam
It does not reduce your MPG by 10%. It reduces it by 2-3%. That's it.

This article / advertisement makes sense to me when your at the gas station pumping gas and your gas is pumping slower than normal the gas is contaminated or phase separated and it's clogged the gas pumps filters.
It's an older article.

The Solution
When dispensing fuels containing ethanol, proper filtration is the answer in the detection of phase separation. Special phase separation "alert" dispenser filters have been developed that will notify the operator of the condition by slowing fuel flow to less than 1 gallon per minute. This "slow flow" condition is a signal that water is present and that the tanks should be tested for phase separation.
These alert filters have a construction that features a non-toxic two-part chemical and "super absorbent polymers," or SAPs, designed to detect elevated levels of water as the fuel tries to pass through the filter. When this phase-separated fuel reaches the reactive chemicals, the SAPs expand and the filter generates a barrier that slows the flow and keeps the phase-separated fuel from passing.
In order to ensure that their water-detecting properties are used to their maximum capabilities, these phase-separation-sensing filters should generally be changed after six months in service, after dispensing 500,000 gallons of fuel, at any point when a reduction in flow rate is detected, or at any time the fuel-load composition is changed.
Handlers of fuels containing ethanol also have to remember that high concentrations of ethanol will scour tanks, hoses and other fueling components, resulting in a lot of contaminants being thrown at the filter. Because of this, filters should be changed more often when tanks are being converted from gasoline-only use to being used with fuels containing any level of ethanol. Before this conversion, it is also wise to dry out wholesale storage tanks and properly prepare retail storage tanks and dispensers for the new fuel.

Mtbe isn't the best octane booster but corn based ethanol isn't very good either IMO.
Wonder the percentage of MTBE they were adding to gas to boost octane levels before they started using E10?

MTBE is a great octane booster. It's poison, but it works great.

Another issue with ethanol, IMO, is corn. Growing corn is like mining your soil, it pulls a lot out of it.

Plus ethanol and gasoline can't be mixed at the refinery so here in the North East we bring in tanker loads of gas and train loads of ethanol to be mixed at the terminal prior to distribution. Therefore trainloads of explosive ethanol are running through densely populated urban areas, one of those being eastern Mass. where non ethanol gas is not available at the pump. This is just as ridiculous as the years and years it took to get ultra poisonous mbte out of gas. Big money, big politics!
Man, the BS in this thread is getting wader deep. Ethanol is grain alcohol which is no where near as volatile as gasoline and not particularly 'explosive.' Next time you get a chance, fire up an old alcohol lantern. Watch it a while. I'll watch it with you. Then refill it with gasoline and .... wait until I get a a few hundred yards away ....and fire it up. We will send condolences to your family.

Yes, the Feds are now lobbied by the Companies (who make hundreds of millions of $ per year mixing ethanol and gas) to keep on producing ethanol tainted gasoline and the government continues to jamb it down our throats/ I mean gas tanks. Both corrupt and stupid. Cost extra. Hurts industry. Messes up small engines. Distorts agricultural food production. There is no upside. None.

My opinion on the subject is really unknown. I’ve never had a problem with fuel, gas or E10 unless it got old. When I’ve had problems it was when a fuel tank was left nearly empty for several months.

I also see a lot of opinions here and not a lot facts. The truth is people read what they want into this issue and take a side. I’m not sure there is a right or wrong answer.

Dave, I'm too lazy to prove every point I made above but I can. That's where my opinions come from. Can I be wrong? Sure, it has happened. But every point I made above can be substantiated with 'beyond reasonable doubt' ref's. Not real sure we need to take up that much space and nervous energy (here) but it can be done if need be. You are absolutely right -- saying that "people read what they want into this issue" and the corollary is they hear what they want to hear. Preconceived notions.

Ethanol doesn't make as much energy as gasoline (sort of) but it makes the fuel much more engine-friendly. It raises the octane (anti-knock) substantially and runs quite a bit cooler.

It is also less efficient. So, it's a trade-off.

I did a little reading on the subject. It looks like it takes about 30,000 btu of energy to make a gallon of ethanol, which yields about 70,000 btu. Some of the energy to make ethanol is going to be fossil fuel, such as planting and harvesting the crops. Depending on how the ethanol plant is powered may or may not use fossil fuels. There are certainly some up sides on ethanol. Do they out weigh the downsides? I don’t know.
