Buying Advice Early '60's MF 35 Utility

My guess would be its overfilled with water and coming out some kind of overflow ? I'd open the drain and let it drain 3 days. That stuff gets like pudding. Then fill to proper level with diesel/alcohol & quart of dextron trans fluid. Run for 15 -20 min working 3 pt & pto. Let set a day then run again 15 min & drain. Should then be ready for the universal tractor HF. Others may have other suggestions, but that procedure worked for my goohy mess and also freed up a non working 3 pt lift.

Great information, everyone. Hoping to get some more work in on it this weekend if time permits. I've got tune-up stuff and shifter boots on the way already, I just have to pick up some good crimp terminals so I can rewire the whole tractor.

Once I see how bad this leak actually is will determine my next step. I certainly don't want to leave the current oil in the transmission/rear if it's got water in it, but also don't want to fill it with new oil prior to potentially splitting the tractor (if it comes to that).

Edit: Jerry just reminded me- I need to order factory service manuals for it!

Check on ebay. You can often find reasonably priced factory service manuals there.

If eBay read closely. Most are on a cd or poor quaility reprints. I got a good quaility reprint from original for ford 801's at tsc. They may have what you need?

The genuine MF manuals won't be cheap, but they are worth it. They won't be on a CD, and it won't be a reprint, search carefully.

You're not kidding, I had the tractor fired up and idling for a while today. I engaged the PTO, it spins, so that's a plus. Three point hitch does not operate. I pulled the drain for the transaxle, holy water, batman. It came out dead clear for the first 10 seconds, and after that, nothing but cream colored nasty water laden oil. It's TERRIBLE. Hopefully your method will free my hitch, I can move it by hand but it doesn't work with the lever.

No luck yet, just repops.

Steiner tractor has reprints that are updated where applicable. They're about $80 or so.

Are factory reprints from Steiner as mentioned above decent?

Good news: the PTO works, the bucket hydraulics all work, too. The clutch still grabs well, tractor moves under it's own power. I had to spray some stuff with PB blast (both the hyd. valves for the bucket) to free them up. Good as new now. I cleaned out the gas bowl, need a new filter screen for it, tank is clean so I bet I could fill it and be good. I also found out that the rear tires, aside from the huge cast weights on them, are also loaded. I pulled the 4-bolt panel under the clutch, lots of oily water came out. Hopefully it doesn't continue to leak, it didn't appear to be leaking any more while I had the tractor running. Gotta clean that up. PS- Where is that weep hole with cotter key? I don't see it anywhere, or even a hole where a cotter key would be?

PROBLEM: I'm not sure if this happened today or not, but after I lifted (by hand) the 3 point hitch while the tractor was running, I noticed cream colored watery oil running out near the PTO lever. Upon closer inspection, that cover is CRACKED! I'm off to try to find a replacement for that, tomorrow I'll drain the rest of the nasty oil but I can't fill with diesel until that cracked plate is fixed or replaced.

With it being cracked, the lever is slightly crooked now, hopefully nothing is seriously messed up in there. I'll pull it off and see if I can get it TIG welded, clean the filter screen, and make a new gasket for it.

Thoughts?

Hopefully you can get the plate welded. I'd still keep an eye out for a replacement though. I have a hunch the 3 pt will magically start working once you get all the gunk out, soak in the diesel concoction and keep moving the lever. Mine was just as bad, less the cracked plate, and it's been working now for 2 yrs.
the reprint of manual from Steiner sounds like a good one. The shop manual I got at tsc for the ford 801's was $20 and it's pretty good for the price. I think it's only 30-40 pages though. $80 should be a good one?

Me too, it looks like aluminum, so that's why I mentioned TIG welding. The manual from Steiner was pretty involved looking, over a hundred pages if I remember right. This kindof put a damper on my plans for tomorrow, I've got 5 gallons of diesel I was planning to dump into it and run it around a bit. Can't do that now with the cracked plate, it'll all just leak right out.

Oh well, I can still go get all the universal tractor oil. I hope my parts show up next week, I'd like to change the engine oil out, too.

Be sure to leave room for a quart of transmission fluid and a bottle of rubbing alcohol. It helps clean, free up and adsorb water

Yep, I've got both of those ready to go, too. I'll make sure to leave room for them.

I'm wondering where I can get rid of this stuff, both the milky oil and the diesel laden with sludge, atf, and alcolhol. (the diesel will probably still burn after being filtered, so most places will likely take it). The milky oil... eh, I doubt anyone will want to take it!

Put it in jugs and take it to Walmart. They'll take it at the auto service area and recycle it
