We have this fence that crosses a dry creek bed. The fence leans too much because we would never tackle digging holes in the rock. So, time to play with the new toy – a Belltec which has constant hydraulic down pressure and carbide tipped teeth on the auger.

The white power you see is ground up rock from the carbide teeth. That’s what it does in solid rock. In fractured rock, the teeth tend to break the rocks up rather than grind through them.

Notice the design of the auger allows you to back into an existing fence and move it out of the way. Good thing we don’t have those nice tight fences like everyone else…

It took maybe 10 to15 minutes to get 42 inches down and yes, it was one solid rock all the way.

One thing about solid rock is it leaves a nice clean hole.

Now with the hole dug and post in, it’s time for leveling and cement.

This was the hardest but easiest hole I’ve ever dug in rock. For what I paid for this thing, it sure needed to perform.

Wow

That auger sure did a nice job. I can imagine it is a very expensive tool. What alternatives are there to get through solid rock? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Maybe not a direct answer to your question, but I would have welded a flat plate with a hole in each corner to a metal post and bolted the plate / pole to the rock.

Like you would a corner post in some wrought Iron handrail installations.
