Eastern Cougar or Panter

Some 40 years ago my wife and I saw a mountain lion come out of the trees on the edge of a field of a horse barn. This was near the Quabbin resevoir area in Mass. About 20 years ago I saw one in Glenburn, (Central) ME - wooded spruce area - more woods than people. Someone at work (avid hunter - bear/moose/coyote/etc) reported seeing one further north. They are there. What species - I don't know, but they are mountain lions.

I've seen some fine cougars in my area...oops, you're discussing big cats!
Sorry!!

My thoughts on non-native species like big cats in Nova Scotia usually revolve around my requirement for daylight to be visible through the animal when it presents itself to me. If daylight isn't immediately visible in at least two areas of said predator, I'll do my best to rectify that situation.

Coyotes getting agressive is bad enough, and we already have that problem. They're on the "daylight plan" already, and if a cougar (4 legged) should appear to my wondering eyes he'd best be flying nap-of-the-earth and close to the speed of sound away from me.

I'm not blood-thirsty when it comes to God's creatures, far from it. I draw the line at big predators that have moved into my immediate vicinity for a meal.

Well lets see...Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina. That is getting mighty close to TN. I thought the surplus of coyotes we have were bad enough. Just another reason to keep the Mini-14 on the tractor I guess.

If I thought a cougar was coming through my property, I'd get some venison from my SIL and set it out for him in the hope he'd get a taste for it. I like fruit and nut trees; I don't like deer. Posted about half in jest.

About 1/4th mile from our place we have a family 1/2 hippy and the other unknown with 6/8 kids and each have at least 2 dogs. Number of adults never determined.
When the noise level of all the dogs and kids gets to high. I have a 200 watt Amp and at full volume play a computer down loaded call from a bob cat.
There is silence for the rest of the night.

To all those who have thought about killing one you may want to rethink it. Like the guy i mentioned in GA you to could be in jail if you told anyone. Most states i beleive they are protected even if they are said not to be there. I know that is the case here in SC it explicitly says under protected species cougar/panther.

Anyway here is the pic i promised.

Several years ago, three of us saw a very large black cat, approx 6-7' long tip-to-tail trot across my B-I-L's back pasture (just south of Gainesboro, TN) in the late afternoon at about 75 yards. From the "hang" of the tail and the low-slung gait, there was no mistaking that it was a LARGE cat. At about the same time, he lost all of his sheep (about 10-12) in the space of a few months. No sightings since, except for one neighbor who often reports odd things and is thus not exactly believable.
