Easy, low buck, exhaust mod to eliminate soot on FEL

Well, so far, I have tried to "smoke myself out" by having the cab door open and bumping the throttle inside the shop. I didn't smell anything until I got out and walked to the front of the tractor. I then turned on my 72" exhaust fan and cleared out the shop.:D The fan wants suck the garage doors in if you don't open some of them.

Up here we refer to guys like you as being in denial
Mother nature will make sure you get a whiff of that exhaust I can assure you of that.
Weather you add the extension ahead of the Axel or behind will make no difference, you will (at times) smell the exhaust. Even if you had left it stock you would have smelled it from time to time with the door open.
I have gotten many emails from owners with open station units telling me they get the fumes all the time.

As you know I've done what you have just tried and it didn't work for me. I just wasn't satisfied with it and that's why I went with the stack conversion.

If your happy then that's great.

A whiff every now and then, I can handle. I just don't want my eyes to burn, get light headed, have soot in my cab etc. So the experiment continues. I will post updates, good or bad as they occur regarding the exhaust. If I made a mistake, I don't want others to do the same. Got 30hrs on her already, won't take long to find out if I'll be happy or not.
For now, I am focused on making front fenders. Metal, plastic, or fiberglass? Hmmm...

I agree. Some things you just need to do and find out for yourself. Although the first short extension didn't please me it was much better that not having it and seeing soot on the FEL. It may be different for you. When I'm out snow clearing there's always someone walking over to te machine to have a few words and having to open the door is when I'd smell it.
I can get you a part number for the fender kit. I may even have it posted on some of my threads. It's not cheap. I think around $600. but it have a pile of support brackets with it.
If I was going to build my own I'd go with a plastic type. They won't rust, they can be painted and most importantly they are flexible and you need that in front fenders. Most of all the equipment I see have all front pastic fenders on them.

One idea for fenders is to use a plastic 55gallon drum and cut the fenders out of it. Done right they look really good. I built a set some years ago for my buddies dune buggy and he was sure happy. Later on he sold the buggy but removed the fenders And kept them.

If you go to build your own fenders and need detaied photos of the brackets and all hardware feel free to contact me and I'll get them for you. Good luck

I regraded a driveway for a customer Monday. During which I had talked to the customer several times, the dump truck driver twice and the neighbor once. At no point did I ever smell any exhaust from my tractor. Maybe because it angles more middle and forward not back at all. Hmmm. Dunno.:confused3: So far so good though.:cool2:

Doesn't look like much from that pic, but I can fit two fingers between them, which is more clearance than it had on the stock set up. I would guess there was only 1/2" before.

HC;

I don't want to hijack your great thread, BUT, tell us the story about your vise. That baby has some scars. It looks like a great family heirloom. What gives?

That's too funny. I wish that I had some great history for this old vise, but I don't. The story is: About three years ago, I had an employee that seemed to break everything that he touched. Anyway, he somehow broke the vice I had mounted on the bench. I had that vise for years... He said, "I go get you another one." I said that they were expensive and not to worry about it. Sure enough he showed up with this old thing. He said it was his grandfathers, and it was in the scrap pile. I laughed and went ahead and installed it, planning on getting a new one that week. Well here I am years later and I still have it.

So, I've wanted to do a mod to my exhaust too, only come out the rear of the tractor. I was thinking of using a larger diameter tubing than the muffler outlet to not increase backpressure. Has anybody done this ?

I doubt that you would increase the back pressure. As a matter of fact, if you go too big you will hurt the scavenging effect and actually hurt the flow. And I would try not to use flex pipe if you can help from it. It has the worst flow characteristics of any pipe. Good luck on your idea. It's totally doable. Make sure you post some pix for the rest of us.
You can always go the way 4shorts did and install a stack.
