Thank you for finally revealing to this "lower 48'er" what Mike Holmes has been saying on his TV program "Make it right" all these years.
I could never figure out what an "Eve-strop" was ! eh?
How about a downspout screen just before it goes into the ground to dump the crud out and let the water go through?
Something like this:

They seem to be, they run about $13 each (or $8 each if you buy a case of 48): Debris Filter / Ice Guard - Waterproof.comThat is very much like what I made except mine were funnels with screens inside. That style is self cleaning (except for needles), I like it. Are they available commercially?
I saw those as well. These looked interesting as well, but the website seems clunky. They seem to be, they run about $13 each (or $8 each if you buy a case of 48): Debris Filter / Ice Guard - Waterproof.com
I also found these: https://www.amazon.com/Amerimax-InvisaFlow-Downspout-Strainer-Filter/dp/B07QRS7KVF/

Took the advice from a contractor and went with 4" downspouts. He smoothed the gutter holes and attached the downspouts. Most everything flushes out with a good rain.
Totally agree :thumbsup:I never understood the design of standard gutters where there's a small hole at the top of the downspout. It's an iron law of plumbing that you never have a drain pipe decrease in diameter. I don't understand why it's not the same for gutters. I'd much rather have a system that moved debris and clean out a trap with both feet on the ground than go up on a ladder.
"Eve strop" ????
I have never heard of "eve-strop"
I think you mean "eve trough".
It is a common term in Canada, and the USA also.
Sorry, never heard that term. Lived in Southern California, Virginia, W Virginia, and Washington State and they've always been called "gutters".
It looks like I'm going to have to do this to my house. I'm getting older and not as brave as I used to be so no more walking around on the roof of the house blowing the leaves out of the gutters.
I'm just wondering what others have used and how well they work. This will be a next summers project.

Years ago, we had our gutters replaced with ones with tops. Rain comes onto the tops and just runs around the lip of the top into the gutter. The tops have kept the gutters clean for around the last 10 years.
One of the best things we've ever done. Absolutely no maintenance required.

Gutter Helmet is one brand that makes something like that.Do you know the brand? Or can you even describe what they look like?
