Extremely annoying, and will probably the the last straw for a lot of folks on dialup. I have a nice big 20" LCD monitor set for 1600x1200, and those bloody eBay adverts take up 30% of my screen width. They're so wide, they force the actual thread titles into second lines. When the banner adds and header are factored in (40% of screen height), the actual forum itself is relegated to less than 30% of the viewing area.
I see misplaced priorities here, when fixed width advertising forces the contextual content to compress. It should be the other way around.
