WH401,

Thanks for the response. I'm going to take a look at the Amsoil Sabre 2-stroke oil. May try the 80:1 like you and see if that cuts the smoking down to a reasonable level. Also, I've been running 87 octane and it looks like it wants 89, so maybe that's an issue too.

Great, anytime. I had been running 87 too, then I went to 89 to make up for the difference in the ethanol added to it and I have noticed everything seems to be much happier. Most of the 2-stroke equipment sold today suggests you run 89 in it as well, that was another reason for me to switch.

BTW, have you had your carb adjustments checked? Would seem if running too rich you may have the symptoms you are. I have found certain oils do smoke more than others. Right off wish I could tell you which was best.

Well, I have played with the carb settings to get to where I am now. In prior years, I could not get the blower to idle; it would die within 20 seconds of idle time. Followed the proceedure outlined in the manual to adjust the low speed and high speed settings, then the idle screw. Seems to run better now than ever powerwise and idles fine, but smokes more. Starts on the 1st or second pull. I don't recall seeing a rich/lean mix screw for this unit. I am going to look in the troubleshooting section of the manual to see if there's any advice on excessive smoking - just keep forgetting to do that. Do 2-stroke engines have rings? In a 4 cycle, I'd be thinking I need new rings.

All engines have rings, that's how you get the compression. If you are bothered by the exhaust, though your problem sounds like a fixable one, why not try out a new one? All the newer ones have high EPA emissions regulations leading to cleaner exhaust. I never smell the exhaust on my 600, though part of that could be from the fact that I have to use a respirator when doing anything dusty or grassy because of my allergies.

Yeah, I was pretty sure 2-cyles had rings too but I was thinking since there's no crakcase oil, there'd be no need for rings to prevent oil getting to the combustion side - didn't think about compression. Can you tell I'm not a mechanic  As far as a new one, well, I've been spending on the tractor and implements lately so a new blower is not in the budget yet and the Echo works great but for the smoking.

No problem, I wont judge ya;). I'd first give the Amsoil a try, if anything it should definately make it smoke less if you run it at 80:1. How old/dirty are the spark plug and air cleaner on it?, that could be a culprit. You can always take it to an Echo dealer that is local to you, I'm sure they would look at it. Give the Amsoil a try first though before you take it to one, it might save you some money.

Good thought on the air cleaner and plugs, been a while since I replaced those so I should do that anway. I recall year's back having to take the spark arrestor off and clean out all the carbon deposits with carb cleaner. That was when I was using the Echo 2-cycle oil. I think that oil gummed things up. The heavy smoking started after I switched to Stihl oil so I do think there's a chance it is slowly cleaning out the carbon. I'm going to try the Amsoil as soon as I finish up the Stihl oil. I have enough for only 2 gallons of mix left. Thanks.
