Echo CS-501 Brief Review

My CS-352 also has dust in the carb mouth. Putting grease on the filter's joints with the inlet did not help. The dust is coming through the filter media.

I bought some oiled foam filter material and put it inside the airbox on the side where there's holes for the carb adjustments. From what I can see that's how most of the air gets to the filter. It's cut down on the dust in the carb mouth.

Yeah I put grease on mine and it still had dust, to the point that a jet was plugged and it wouldn't start. I called echo and some kid talked smart mouth to me when I asked if they had a fix. So I said F-it and got rid of it.

I will be quiet now don't want to de-rail the OP's thread or be negative.

I didn't expect a problem since the 500 was a shindaiwa carry over. Never had any trouble my shindaiwa stuff.

If they fixed it I would buy a 501. I liked everything but the filter.

I haven't heard of sawdust clogging a jet before -- that sucks. Normally the issue is that it runs through the cylinder and can cause issues with the piston over time.

Echo used to have optional flocked filters and heavy duty filters for some of their saws. Not sure if they offer one for these saws, but it's worth looking into. There are also generic filter "booties" that may fit (they snug over the filter).

Anything that improves filtration on a chainsaw is a good idea. I added a wool pre-filter on my Stihl 461 since milling lumber makes a lot of fine dust that was packing the corrugations on the regular filter.

I'll study the 501 filter compartment in more detail next time I service it and see if I can see any ways to improve the filtration. Though I have to say, I've put a lot of hours on this saw and the dust hasn't been a problem yet. But the fact that it's visible isn't good.

It was more fine dirt in the carb throat. I just blamed that since it was plugged and wouldn't start. I guess it's not likely.

I love the Echo CS 400, it's a Homeowner Best Choice. Stihl and Husqvarna are brand names that are recognized by professionals in the tree removal industry, however, Echo created a line for the homeowner who doesn稚 need nor wants a large, heavy chainsaw. Chainsaws take a lot of focused, dedicated work and for the casual user, a lighter machine is much easier to handle.

I've owned a CS-510 (49cc) for 15 yrs now and it's never once caused me to fuss.
I't fired every time I've pulled it, albeit twice or three times if it's been sitting for a spell.
Great little saw.
