EcoDiesel, A Maiden Voyage

Ugh!:confused2:
Ram's ecodiesel is doing very well. Fuel mileage is right around 23 mpg combined and 27-30 mpg highway; towing (3000-9000+ lbs) it's getting between 12 and 19 mpg. It's got a 9.25" rear end, semi floating axle (like all half tons); if the payload isn't good enough add air bags and you're good to go (within reason). IMO, most people aren't worried about going over the gvwr (again, within reason).

The diesel engine is $3350 option (price includes $500 for 8sp Transmission). Unless you're in business, I don't see why this particular option has to pay for itself. What other option pays for itself?--electric windows, heated seats etc... It is, in all lightly hood the only option that could pay for itself. In my area a diesel needs to get 2 mpg more than a gas engine to be a wash. Then there is dpf fluid and oil changes, so maybe it needs to be 4 mpg better to be a wash.

Most of the people that are buying the ecodiesel are coming from a Ram Hemi or a 250/2500 diesel and are thrill with them; plenty of power, quiet, good quality vehicle and of course really good fuel mileage.

If anyone wants info on the ecodiesel, go to a ram or ram 1500 ecodiesel web site...this section of tractorby net is basically a ford forum (at least where trucks are concerned). I do think if the ecodiesel was in blue oval truck, it would be the best thing since sliced bread. I also find it interesting that on THIS forum (tractorbynet) anyone would complain where or who makes this engine. Most tractor engines are made in Japan, South Korea or China...what's wrong with Italy? Is it because the same engine is used in Maserati Ghiblic?

Ugh! I think I only reason I read the ecodiesel threads on this website is to aggravate myself.:banghead:

Would love to test drive an eco-diesel RAM near me but there are none on the lots according to the RAM truck finder. For my area diesel prices fluctuate during the year. In the winter it seems to compete with home heating oil and it skyrockets up. Typically, in the summer it comes down to 87 gasoline levels. Would love to see the sales figures for the eco-diesel RAM 1500 as it makes it's way fully onto the market.

I bet ecodiesel sales will fall off once the Titan and Tundra get the Cummins and Ford comes out with the 2.7 economist.

I would think that either you need a truck right now or a fan of Dodge if you don't wait until next year. Dodge doesn't have the best track record for quality so waiting a year for them to work the kinks out for a vehicle you could own for 5 to 10 years doesn't sound like a bad plan to me. Plus we'll know more about what Toyota and Nissan are doing with the Cummins.

I once thought I wanted diesels, but no more. The increased maintenance and fuel costs combined with a random fuel pump problem siphoned the desire diesel right off.

I always wanted a diesel, and now that I have one, I love it! It tows my fifth wheel like it's nothing (well, maybe an exaggeration, but it tows amazingly well). However, if Ford were to offer an EcoBoost in the F250, I would definitely go that route. I've had no troubles with my diesel, but the DPF is a bit of a pain for the type of driving I do, and with the extra fuel cost of diesel, there is no savings on fuel vs. gas.

The places I've lived must be Midwestern corn belt anomalies but diesel fuel has been more expensive than 87 octane regular unleaded since regular unleaded started to cost more than a buck a gallon in ~2001 or so. Diesel fuel is generally the most expensive fuel available at the gas station unless the gas station has 93 octane no-ethanol premium instead of the usual 91 octane 10% ethanol premium.

Same here in Indiana. It's always 20% more.

Most people don't realize that.

That was supposed to be 2.7 ecoboost not economist the auto correct on my phone changed it:laughing:

The high cost of repair on a diesel is scary too.
