Electrical Panel Mounting - Polebarn

   / Electrical Panel Mounting - Polebarn #11
I just had my barn wired and the electricians said the code changed a few years ago, they are no longer allowed to put separate ground rods at each location. The ground wire has to be run uninterrupted back to the ground at the main service panel, and only the main service panel can be connected to a ground rod. I called the county to confirm that, they said the same thing. Not sure if this is something local around here, or part of the NEC.

Not sure about that -- I checked the most recent code when wiring my pier in 2013, and the rules were no ground rod required if a branch circuit, but ground rod required if a feeder circuit. That hasn't changed from what I know.

My friend that is an electrician told me the same thing. You need to run four conductors from the house to the barn per code. They changed the code because the ground rod in each locations could be at different potential. Having just one earth ground at the house eliminates the possibility of a difference in potential.

Wow that is a strange one if it's a service wired with two insulated lines, an insulated neutral and a dedicated ground.
Buuuuuuuuuuttttttttttttttttt..............if it one of those nasty overhead triplex service supplies which the utilities used back when nobody knew any better. And are still Grandfathered to this day. Then yes some utilities made sure the ground system doesn't run neutral current. The triplex neutral will only have one connection to ground at or near the meter base. All breaker/fuse panels will however have a pair of ground rods connected to the ground bar and a floating neutral bar.
