THHN would work fine. Around here we have so many rocks and so much rock movement from frost I would use the UF for that extra bit of protection. No rocks or no frost would change my choice.

I have the same system as UncleBuck257 and as he I had to install a 12v auto battery also, I just Paralled it in the system and it has worked for four years.
I have 120v plug close to my gate now for holliday lights and if I need power for something else but I still use the solar system for the gate...I figure it works and why fix something that works fine.
