Electricity to Barn (350 ft)

I thought 2 ground rods was a no-no ?

the code requires 1 additional ground rod at another building for 100 amps and 2 for 200 amps. There HAS to be a ground wire run between the buildings also.

as long as the ground rods are tied together, there isn't the 2 source of ground issues.

It sounds like your bidders bid on two different options. Do you need 120 volts at 60 amps or 240 volts at sixty amps. If the distance was short the 10/3 with ground would be ok for the 120 volt 60 amp if no single load was greater than 30 amps. Of course the distance is not short. Stay away from this guy he does not understand voltage drop. What else does he not know? Please describe your loads.

Are you with rapahannock electric coop? If so check with them. I found out after the fact that they could have done it much cheaper than i did renting a trencher and buying my own wire.

I too am in the business and in my opinion, options #3 and #4 are out as they do not account for voltage drop. Actually, there is no way to get 60 amps from a single 10 gauge wire. I don't really understand option #1 running 2 6/3 wires. Option #2 sounds right on the wire they will run but maybe a little high in price. Probably between 500.00 and a 1000.00 more then I would charge for the same job. Now I haven't sat down and figured all the materials and labor out for an exact quote but just figuring in my head I would say it seems a bit high.

It depends on Authority Having Jurisdiction

by NEC no but I got gigged on a 220v 30 amp service to a shed because the AHJ wanted it and I got too many grey hairs already to argue over $25 in materials and time just my opinion.

As far as the minimum depth of burial that means ( how close is it to the surface ). There is nothing in the code that stops you from putting it down deeper within reason.

I believe the code specifies a range, not just a minimum. When we had a house built a dozen years ago, the contractor dug the power line ditch too deep. The utility company made him backfill to the proper depth before putting in the line.

This was the line from the street to the transformer, so maybe they were more picky on that.

My wife is going to call Rapahannock Electric again for the monthly price of the meter but if its $65 a month, we are going with the subpanel off the house.

Also, thanks for information all, it was very informative.

I'm leaning towards #2 and they said I could save some money if I do the back fill

Someone asked me what what I would be running in the barn. Attached is my chart.
OOPs should be 5 amp for the car charger. (fixed chart)

nope..you can bury it as deep as you want, the minimum depth is all they care about.

now, that being said. some PUBLIC UTILITIES/power companies may specify a certain depth, but the NEC doesn't set a maximum depth.
