Emax 20s questions....

My son just picked up an Emax 20s and is about to do it's 50hr service. Bought it with 36 hrs. The manual calls for gear oil in one place, and hydraulic fluid in another for the HST. The local dealer said Mahindra rep said gear oil was correct. This sounds wrong to me, but ??? Not interested in buying a $2k HST pump if its wrong. Anyone have a good, solid answer?

Suspect you're reading the manual wrong... typically you check the oil in the front axle (gear oil), and change the HST fluid (hydraulic fluid/oil).

Can you take a picture of the manual page in question?

(3) Oil Specification.
THF 80W
(API GL-4 Grade Gear Oil 80W)

And
5-20
Which says
API GL-4 Grade SAE 80W/90
(Mahindra Universal TraCtor hydraulic fluid)

AND the dealer said Mahindra Rep told him 80W Gear oil.

Hydraulic fluid is oil, so while it's not that helpful and clear, it's probably accurate as far as specs go.
Use the first for the axle, use the second for the HST.

To be clear- THF is Tractor Hydraulic Fluid. It is typically used in the HST. Which, in your case, also runs the hydraulics.

I don’t know of a modern tractor hydraulic system or HST that runs on gear oil. But I’m no emax expert.

Gear oil can be used in the front axle. In warmer climates it’s probably best. In cooler climates (think freezing temps all winter) THF in the front axle is fine. The front axle lives an easy life from a fluid stand point.

I thought it should be regular UTF also, but the gear oil statement in parenthesis threw us off, then when he called one dealer and he says Mahindra rep told him "gear oil", I told him to check another dealer, and I posted here.

Hydraulic fluid and gear oil are decidedly different animals, but I've never had a HST. Since this post, a second dealer said the same, UTF, for the trans.
