End of ethanol?

I am definitely NOT an ethanol lover. Shell Oil in Canada sells V-Power (high test) gas that has no ethanol.

Is Shell V-Power premium gasoline safe for all vehicles?

Shell V-Power is effective in all gasoline-powered engines found in conventional, modern and hybrid vehicles as well as motorcycles, snowmobiles, and leisure marine vehicles.
Tested in today’s advanced turbo-charged and direct injection engines, Shell V-Power helps resist thermal breakdown at high temperatures, actively protecting against gunk under tough engine conditions.
Shell V-Power premium gasoline in Canada does not contain ethanol.

if you would go to puregas.org you can find stations in your state still selling enthanol free fuel. in our area its more expensive than the enthanol spiked gas. i think some stations are calling it recreational fuel.

I know that Nice and Easy stores in my area have separate pumps for NON-Ethanol gas. Of course it does cost more. The NON-Ethanol is better for those of us who drive antiques and classic cars and Nice and Easy sponsors weekly car cruises here too but I don't think that has anything to do with them selling NON-E gas since other stations have it too.

Allowing ethanol to be eliminated would be smart. Try to name one time the government did something smart. You would have to have either an amazing memory or imagination to come up with one.

Ethanol is an oxygenate. Oxygenates are added to fuels to improve combustion and reduce pollutants. Before ethanol, MTBE was the oxygenate of choice here in the US. Then, someone got the bright idea to change because, gas station tanks were leaking fuel into the surrounding soil and eventually into the groundwater. Then, everybody got scared that MTBE was a carcinogen and would cause birth defects. The WHO said MTBE is not a carcinogen but by that time, ADM and the corn farmers had the upper.....you get the idea. So, instead of fixing the leaking tanks, the government said, let's switch to ethanol which doesn't have that smell. MTBE is made from natural gas which is abundant and cheap. The process is energy negative meaning, you make more MTBE than you consume energy. Meanwhile, the rest of the world is still using the cheap MTBE and producing corn for feed and food, not fuel.

The US Government? A place to work if you can't get a job in the private sector.

If you have an airport near by. Aviation low lead is great gas.

I use to run it in my Harley, with in about 2 miles the engine would smooth out and start to really run. With in 10 miles the Horse power went up enough that you could actually feel it when accelerating or going up steep hills.

Don't know anymore but it use to be available near boating areas.

Lead does a couple of important things. I lubes the valve stems & helps seal the valves.

METHYL TERTIARY-BUTYL ETHER is oxygenate and octane booster. The probelm with MTBE was that it was water soluble and therefore easily contaminated ground water. So I am asking would you drink water contamiated with MTBE regardless it is carcinogen or not. By the way it stinks. What scared the oil companies was the cost of clean up of single aqufier poluted by single leaking gasoline tank. MTBE used to be replacement for Tetra Ethyl Lead that was used as octane booster in leaded gasoline. TED had similar issue. It stayed in the environment long time poluting ground adjacent to roads. So I am asking again would you eat meat from an animal if you knew or just suspect it was grazed by the road?

TEL (Tetra Ethyl Lead) is octane booster. It makes gasoline burn slower producing softer more efficient energy discharge. The problem is that if you use it in low compression engine (designed for low octane gasoline) it could burn too slow and burn your exhaust valve because the valve could open before the combustion and expansion (that cools the gas) is completed. Unless your engine has sophisticated electronics that could adjust the spark advance based on (in example) pinging detection I would be careful using it without increasing ignition advance.

TEL is neurotoxic. It will damage catalytic converter.

It is a myth that leaded high octane gas will burn valves.
I use to burn 115/145 in my 56 Oldsmobile. The biggest problem was it burns so cool in auto engines that plugs will fowl If used all the time. I did have to clean them fairly often.

Lead is a health hazard, but greatly over blown. Lead was used in almost all paint & all gasoline to the best of knowledge no died from it. Causes Cancer?? Could be, but cancer risks were no higher before it was banned than now. You almost have to eat lead ( paint chips) before it hurts you.

The EPA & Gov went nuts on lead & asbestos, were they even close to as dangerous as claimed, I'd be long dead.

First of all, most feed lots are not near the road. Also, I don't usually eat road-kill. Next, most water supplies have either very low or BDL of MTBE. The MTBE that was found in groundwater was a mostly isolated case on the west coast. Next, MTBE is removed from drinking water by filtration through activated carbon.

Finally, TEL was used as an anti-knock additive in fuel to control detonation, a dangerous and potentially damaging combustion phenomenon. In engines using poppet valves, the TEL reduced valve seat errosion but fouled spark plugs and other engine components.

The TEL problem is not really similar to MTBE....lead in the environment is dangerous, toxic and carcinogenic. MTBE is not a carcinogen but is a taste and odor nuisance...hardly a reason to turn the world upsidedown with ethanol.

Many private residential well water supplies use some sort of filtration and organic control (Activated carbon) to improve the taste of their well water. Private wells are more apt to exhibit iron (ferrous, Fe++) problems than MTBE issues.

I don't mind running 15% ethanol in my fuel as long as they aren't putting MBTE in it and then dumping it into the water supply.

We don't need ethonal anymore. We are better off drilling our own oil . We could also sell all the corn we could harvest over seas. This is a much better idea. Here is why. We want countries dependent on us , not the other way around. We can control foolish countries that do something stupid if we control their food supply. I am not one to get on a rant over ethonal and is not quite as bad as we think. It gets slightly less MPG and for every 3 bushels of corn we make into ethanol, we get 1 bushel of distillers grain. We have a very good market to India and China so they can feed their farm animal. It is very high in protein so it is used along less desireable food over seas. Not all bad, but there is corn being grown on land that should be idle land. 2.5 million ac. have seen the plow just in S. Dakota because of ethanol. Wild game has suffered, especially pheasants. We could burn the cobs and stalks for elctricity and use the corn to make chickens and pork for export too. I say get rid of it.
