You need a big generator to power a welder so you are better off getting a combo welder/generator. It all depends on your budget. If you want to spend less than $1000, it's pretty slim picking for something that will do stick, MIG and have a good size generator.

The gxt or gtx 250 Lincoln is a nice all around machine. It is remote ready too. I'm fond of my bobcat, it's not fancy but it works. I like the 305 Lincolns, they have a good arc.

Check out alternator welders, you can build one pretty cheap and you might already have the parts around. Here's an old article to get you thinking. There's lots of better info out there now. You can build a 200 amp DC welder with a 100% duty cycle for pretty cheap - if you like to build that sort of stuff.

Years ago I picked up a 400 amp Miller welding/generator with a Deutsch diesel engine mounted on a trailer. It has 6000 hours on it but it runs well and always start on first try
