Did you every fine him??

Bruce Guthrie

Hello Gravelymay, Yes I found him by another person who gave me an old email address that was still good, and he is alive and well and has all the parts to convert an L series to a Honda type motor, My old Studebaker engine is already at 0.040" oversize on the cylinder and is now needing a rebuild but I think a Chinese Honda might be better as I would be "Loathed" to retire the mower as there is nothing of this "Quality" available today.
Cheers Andrew from NZ

This isn't an issue when repowering an L model other than blocking off the original oil lines, many use pipe plugs to close up any line connections on the transmission housing, all newer model 2 wheel Gravelys (after the L) used splash lube in the transmission.

Thank you very much for comment

Bruce from N.Zealand said:

When replacing the old Studebaker engine (with oil pump)
for a Honda or similar: you must use between 4.5 and 5
litres of engine oil in the transmission. When you do this,
be careful with changing mower or cultivator as it will spill
out.

So, I fill it with oil 10W30 and it´s ok.

Jeeze I forgot that important info on the additional oil in the trans, yes if I remember correctly my Kohler tractor uses 4 qts and it is engine oil, do not use gear oil as most of the stuff available has additives that are harmful to the brass gear.

FYI: I have three Simplicity two-wheel tractors and my Gravely attachments that require GL-4 gear oil. I was able to find it a NAPA.

Yes if you locate the "special" stuff (GL4) that works, wont eat the brass gear. Last I know from those into Gravelys said engine oil for the trans also.
