The owners manual for my 2860M calls for either 5w30 or 10w30. I was looking around online and found a quick reference sheet and a video from Massey Ferguson that calls for 5w40. Then a quick google search indicated that there may have been an update to 15w40.

Was there a technical bulletin or something put out that updates what the correct oil is? I'd like to see it somewhere official before my upcoming oil change.

Thanks.

The truth is you will never know the difference. In very cold climates there may be an advantage with the 5W40 over the 15W40. These __ W __ oils are "multi-grade" meaning that they are processed to adjust their own viscosity in the reverse of "colder is thicker." In the old days (e.g. when I was a kid in the 1950's) you had to buy single grade motor oil appropriate for the predominant temperatures you would be operating under. Some people even changed their oil fall and spring to try matching nature better. Multi-grade oils were a great innovation to minimize nuisance concerns with oil viscosity.

Synthetic oil these days is a whole new ball game in some ways -- with a reputation for being OK to extend, even double, intervals before changing the lubricant.

Cannot advise on your MF but running Rotells 5w-40 T6 Rotella in my New Holland. Also running it in all my air cooled 4 stroke engines. Like you my operators manual listed several weight oils for different temps. Settled on this 1 oil and have been quite pleased with the results.

Me too -- seems to be a good product. I use it in a MF 2660 Perkins diesel and in 4 different Kubotas, all diesels.

Thanks for the inputs and validating the update. I'll be going with the Rotella T6 5w40. The 5 or 10w30 would have likely performed adequately, but I figure they had a reason for updating the specs. I just wish MF/Agco would make this info like spec updates easier to find on their website.
