1988 John Deere 750
I have a 1989 John Deere 750. Just recently the engine started to not shut off when I shut it down. Long story, but I noticed that if you lift up on the foot throttle the engine shuts right off for me. Looking further it seems that the linkage seems to be sticking where it is attached near the front of the engine. I attached a pic below. I circled the area in question in a red circle. I am really not sure what is going on here. I was hoping someone might have an idea what might be going on. Oh yeah, the spring that is attached closer to the throttle/foot throttle area doesn't seem to want to pull back with enough force. Could it be the spring?

First I'd make sure the linkage is free to move.. then look at replacing the spring.. looks to be part #CH13481, about $3-4

Its got an adjustment staring at u..

Thanks, but your advice is pretty vague. I am going to assume you are referring to the rod that connects the governor to the speed control lever. Since the rod is threaded and there are two nuts on either side of the governor lever.

So, I have been dragging my feet here. The issue was hit or miss up until recently. Now it is all the time. So, here is what I have done so far. I bought the spring which "Beenthere" suggested which did not fix the issue. I made sure that all the linkages are free to move and they seem to be. After that I went ahead and bought the friction plate and most of the other fasteners. I cleaned up all the old parts and hit them with an electric wire wheel brush. Polished everything up nice.

The problem is still present. So, I bought a technical manual and have been researching this issue as best I can. Based on what I read in the manual it would seem that I can safely adjust the two nuts on the rod which connects the speed control to the governor system. As the governor is adjusted by a different means. So I am assuming that due to wear and tear the rod simply needs to be "lengthened" which is done by adjusting these two nuts in question. Am I correct in this assessment?

I attached a couple of pics. The pic on the right is essentially the same one as above with the red circle. Those are the two nuts I figure I can adjust the rod with without any concern of it messing with the governor system. The pic on the left is the polished up speed control assembly.

Thanks for any advice you have to offer. I appreciate it.

There are all sorts of threads there. Why not try it?
That’s what I figured. I just wanted to be sure that if I adjusted that rod by turning those nuts, it would not bother engine rpm at all. I don’t think it will but wanted to be sure. Thanks for your help!

I have no idea either way. You’ll find out though. If your worried just do it a little bit at a time.

Hey GRS. I don’t know about that. Have to look into it. Seems everything so far is all mechanical. Nothing electrical. To stop this model tractor all you have to do is pull the hand throttle fully rearward.
