Engine Shutdown

   / Engine Shutdown #11
I've heard of old detroits syphoning their own oil, and sucking seals in when a choke plate was thrown over a runaway engine.

Kinda neat how determined the engine is to run..... guess a compression release lever would cure that...

My Iseki 1610 which should be almost identical to your larger tractor is shut down via the spring butterfly on the intake.

I have to remember to open this when i wish to start the tractor.

Here at work the guys were building a piece of road construction machinery that had a Detroit diesel in it.

Anyway the painter comes over with some paint and paint thinner to do some touch up work and accidentally turns over the gallon can of thinner next to the air intake while the engine was running.

Then engine just took off and they didn't call em screamin Jimmys for nothing. The lead line forman ripped the intake tubing off and start stuffing it full of rags trying to choke it off to no avail. The engine sucked the rags in and spit them out exhaust.

Finally someone grabbed a pair of pliers and clamped and fuel line shut.

Unless butterfly has a solenoid or cable actuator, it's probably just to keep critters and weather out. A spring return butterfly is normally opened by vaccum and closes by itself at shutdown. Most larger engines I've worked with have air intake shutoff as emergency feature for overspeed and is govenor actuated electrically or hydromechanically (oil).

if the engine overrevved from the paint thinner then crimping the fuel line did nothing at all, the diesel was running on the fumes of the paint thinner, so the only way to have stopped that woulda been to cut off the air as your boss tried to do, it was just coincedence that when they crimped the fuel line off was when the engine finaly used up the paint thinner that was in the intake.

Hi John,
I have the service and repair manual for the Bolens equivalent model of your tractor. Shutting the fuel off is probably one god way to shut off the motor. However, the following is from the manual:

" The engine stopping device of this engine is an intake shuitter which is most popular among diesel engines. A butterfly valve is equipped on the intake manifold to close the air intake port to cut off the air to combust fuel. Consequently, the engine stops regardless of the fuel injection volume or engine speed. However, it is not recommended to close off the valve when the engine is running at high speed or is loaded, except in an emergency." HTH
